Yes they do understand English, but bunyips can be very rude and surly.
They choose to pretend they don't understand.

I don't even try to talk to them any more.

Why would they understand english? They wouldn't have gone to school here. English is only been here 200 years.

none of these other answers are correct. Bunyips have been in Australia since the dreaming, but if you expect one to talk to you..............you're dreaming.
