Isn't it amazing how, whenever Australians speak, it sounds a lot like English?
There are Aboriginal languages, but they're not widely spoken. |

English is the national language, and is spoken and written in a distinct variety known as Australian English. |

If you can think of a language - then it is spoken in Australia.
One only has to travel on public transport (train, bus etc) & every second person is yelling on their mobile phones. I can only ever understand about 1 conversation in 10 - as they are generally conducted in a foreign language.
We have people arriving in our country, as migrants, on a daily basis & 99% of them refuse to learn the English language. They claim we are being racist if we demand it re employment, or some other reason. |

English is the official national language of Australia.
In practise, we all speak Australian English which differs slightly from British and American English and has major influences from both. It is easily understandable, in spite of the wide use of Australian slang and a tendency to shorten every word imaginable. Australia is a very multicultural country, you will likely hear most common world languages in the city streets. Australians will revert to standard English for foreigners, so its not a problem speaking to the locals. |
