English is spoken here ( the most common dialect being " strine " it's a variation of English as it should be spoken ) except by the new arrivals from countries that do not have the English as a first language. Chinese is the second most spoken language. |

It's pretty much English. Australia is not a multi-lingual country, though immigrants often continue to speak their own language in addition to English |

English and Shiraz :) Actually Queen's English but there are Aboriginese languages spoken there as well as Spanish, Irish, and about a million others.
I think English is the official language though... |

While, yes, English is the official language, due to heavy immigration over the history of white settlement, there are many languages that are spoken widely.
Most of the major cities will have large Chinese populations, but there are also many native Greek speakers (mainly in Melbourne) and Italians, with a big immigration boom from those countries in the '50s and '60s.
There are considerable urban Vietnamese populations after the '80s and a few outposts of German speakers from the late 19th/early 20th centuries.
While Australia has a large Indian population, though, there is very little Hindi spoken. |

Being half and half, Australian & American, I can attest that the Aussies speak english about like the Americans speak english. "To each his own" But we can communicate with each other. It is living hell to try to hold a conversation with an Englishman a Australian and an American. The common word is "huh?" |

Okay...Australia's national language is English...but I do have to say it is Australia's own spin on the English language. As Australians, some have a tendancy not to ennunciate many words including those ending in "er" which ususally end up sounding like they end with an "a". We have slight differences in spelling to that of American english...such as "favour" and "favor" and "colour" and "color".
As Australia is a huge mulitcultural society...about one third of the people that live here were not born here or their parents were not born in Australia. Because of that, many people have english as a second language and they speak the language of their heritgage as well as english.
As well as this there are indigenous Australians that have their own languages...although many Aboriginals do not speak the language of their tribe, very few in fact. I do hear a lot of them talking broken english or pidgeon which is a combination of english and languages from the Torres Strait Islands.. |
