The majority of the Australian population lives down the east coast and along the south coast to just west of Adelaide. This is because that is where most of the rain falls.
The populated regions extend 100 to 300 kilometres inland from the coast. Even within these areas there are regions with very few people because either there is little rain or the soil has no fertility. Anywhere west of a wobbly line from about Cairns to Adelaide is semi-arid or arid.
There is a patch of population around Perth in Western Australia because, again, that is where rain falls. The more northerly coast of WA is a region where the desert comes down to the sea.
The fact is that about 70% of the country is effectively uninhabitable.

Western Australia is, but really the interior interior is pretty devoid of human life.

The Kimberleys in the North of West Australia.

The centre (interior) of the country mostly has small towns or is deserted. The huge majority if the population lives along the coasts. You should see the area around Ayre's Rock- if they didnt bring in all the people to work there, there would just be a huge rock in the middle of an even huger desert.

You can drive around 2 hours out of any major city and could swear no soul has ever been there before. Not even that hard to find coastal regions that give this but far North West Western Australia will do it. Really depends on what you mean by developed. If I name a place it means its developed in my books.

85% of the population are in the SE corner of Australia (draw a line along the mountain range from Rockhampton (central Queensland) to Adelaide.
The Northern Territory (south of Kathrine) has cattle ranches larger than some USA states. (... maybe 200 ranches in an area the size of Montana, though I am not sure of the correct figure)
Much of Northern Territory and Western Australia you need to get permission from local Aboriginal tribes to drive through their land (Aboriginal Affairs Offices in Darwin and Perth, respectively)

Anywhere off the coast really. As in most countries people flock to the water.
