What prominent gay people do you admire?

Personally I admire Bob Brown, the leader of the Australian Greens, and Dr Kerryn Phelps, former President of the Australian Medical Association.

Bob Brown. Against all odds, he now leads Australia in core human rights issues. He wants Centerlink sorted out and if anyone can make it happen it is Bob Brown.

I admire him greatly and he is a wonderful ambassador for gay men. I imagine he has had his moments of suffering, but like the pheonix nothing gets him down for long.

His example of courage and tenacity inspires me, and i think in many many cases he inspires other Australians.

Jodie Foster, she is a wonderfully versatile actor, and I admire her for publicly recognising and thanking her long time partner at a recent film event.

Michael Kirby. High Court Justice.

I wanted to answer this question, but I had a hard time remembering who was gay and who wasn't. It showed me that I see them as people first, and then, way down the list, I see them by their sexuality. I respect Ellen DeGeneres, because she was brave enough to come back to TV after being treated so wrongly. I wouldn't simply admire a gay person because they "came out." I would admire them for their talent and societal contributions, as I would straight people. With that said - the list would be to long to write here. It is a very good question, though.

I admire Missy Higgins coming out this year also.

What about Sir Elton John?

I'm also an Ellen Degeneres, Melissa Etheridge, Portia De Rossi, Anne Heche, Missy Higgins fan.

Bob Brown will be the biggest loss to Australia when his time in Parliament ends sometime in the next couple of years :-(

Kerryn Phelps is a strong role model as is Justice Michael Kirby.

But I must also say that I admire less prominent people such as the Australian Idol singer Anthony who 'came out' publicly, even though it would have been much more difficult and risky for someone not so well established, well connected and prominent to do so.

There's a lot to admire from both ends of the spectrum ~ well known and unknown!

Cheers :-)

Sorry, I don't know of any prominent gay people. There is a Spanish lady here in New York that's gay but I forgot her name and political office. The only other name comes to mind is Janet Reno. The other gay people that I know of are in the entertainment field.
