Some of the most interesting places in NZ are in the far south of the South Island, where I live. The Automobile Association here recently asked the public to vote for their favourite tourist attractions in NZ. Top of the list was Milford Sound. Other popular choices were Queenstown, Te Anau, Arrowtown, Wanaka, the Southern Scenic Route, Stewart Island and the tramping tracks down here, like the Milford and Kepler tracks.

Rotarua, the geothermal 'hot spot'... lol. this is where you'll find the steaming mud pools and geysers.

Waitomo caves is definitely worth a look too, you can go cave rafting, cave tubing, both heaps fun, plus the place is lit up with glow worms, it's really spectacular.

And of course, you HAVE to see a footy match!!! GO WARRIORS!!!!!

Queenstown in the south Island and Rotorua in the north.

As an ex kiwi I can safely say that NZ is a beautiful country and the South Island is beautiful but the North Island is also nice. The top of NZ makes a beautiful journey and there are many tours etc...and Rotorua in the Nth Is is also lovely if you don't mind the smell and want to experience some real traditional NZ stuff - it's full of the maori culture and interesting facts about the wonderful natural springs. It's such a small country, you should make sure you see most of it if you are going there.

I went to NZ some years back, went to the south island, Christchurch, Queenstown, Te Anu and Milford Sound. But the best place?

Initially when my travel agent scheduled us to go to Franz Josef Glacier, I thought "Why would I want to see a big chunk of ice?" It does not sound appealing. But I can now say that visiting that place was the highlight of our trip. It was just awesome! If you get to go there, make sure you fly in a helicopter over Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, and take heaps of photos from the chopper itself. Then, go for one of those guided glacier walks. You will not be disappointed.
