Pretty much the same as anywhere else. Whenever there are people who are different from each other culturally and physically there will be people who try and force their views on others.
I have friends of all races - Asian, African, Aboriginal and Caucasian - they are tolerant and nice people. There are also people of all these races that drive me crazy with their attitudes and actions - I don't think it has anything to do with their race.
I don't think we should generalise about any race or religion - that is where the problem starts. |

Any problems we have come from the fact that there are small minorities in all races and ethnic groups who are bigots and racists.
The majority of people thankfully are not like that. |

EDIT WHERE DID MOO GO ??????
I'm with Moo on this .....
sure we have a few racial issues .. often fuelled by moronic ignorant people LIKE THE PERSON ABOVE MOO.......
and sometimes you have new australians ( or their children) that may have chips on their shoulders .. but you know ... I reckon that THOSE Kids would have a chip on their shoulder WHEREVER they were......
Australia's history .. even with the horrible old White Australia Policy .. .is still very multicultural..... From the days of the Convicts first arriving ... the indigenous peoples were joined by MANY different races and nationalities....
Then we have had the Afghan Traders that helped us open the interior... The Chinese Gold miners.. the Japanese Pearlers ... the german wine makers... the Italians .. the Greeks.. the Asians .. and all others from all around the globe..
considering the number of different nationalities and races .. we generally get along pretty well .. and we will continue to do so REGARDLESS to the biggots and their fears....
I thank God for the fact that we have had our culture enriched as we have and I am prepared to learn more about those who come to AU from other lands .. because the more I learn ... the more I understand .
Most aussies would help ANYBODY of any race/nationality out if they needed help ...
I certainly COULDN'T NOT help somebody JUST because they don't share my anglo-saxon-celtic heritage. |

I don't usually agree with Moo but what he said pretty much hit the nail on the head. |

leanda you have it SPOT ON!
im going to be downright honest here.....i expect a fair few thumbs down but this is HOW IT IS!
Yes, Europians did encrouch on native land in Australia, there has been arguments between the Natives and the Whites for....ever. This still goes on today.
As for forign immigrants: While most do come here and really want to learn about the Australian culture and understand what Australia has done at war and in other moments of history, you get such pople (not all of these but a majority) of Lebanese, Turkish and any Arabs as well as some Africans who come here just to get a peice of paper saying that they are Australian and then just suck the government out of money! its all Money, Moneyu, MONEY for those people (not all remember...most).
And then when war breaks out in Lebanon, all these "Lebanese-Australians' all the sudden want help from our government to get 'home' to Australia. They get their peice of paper, an Austrlain passport and then abuse the rights of it and the Government doesnt stand up for it!
I see the point that they are Australians and that any other Caucasion Australian would expect the help. But when they go back to Lebanon to LIVE and then expect to rush to Australia at the sound of a cannon...thats abusing the rights as an Australian.
Our prime Minister Kevin Rudd will make an appology to the Stolen Generation of aboriginals...that will start building a bridge and hopefully all this nonsence can end soon.
I just dont like it when someone abuses the rights as an AUstralian citizen.....and now they are compalining that a 20 question test to be a citizen is to hard when they are given a book to study with all the answers in it and they only need 12 questions right! And then they go back to their home country....its crap.
And to someone else above....have you ever heard of Aussie slang....most of our words have been shortened so dont think that we are trying to snub the English! |

Australia has a long and extensive history of racist government policies, which has left its mark on the country.
there is a tradition that white australia made it without the input of non-whites, but Aboriginal people & asians have traditionallly been written out of history, or outright excluded.
(think the white australia policy and assimilation policies)
Aboriginal people weren't even considered citizens of their own country until the 1967 referrendum, which coincidently a large number of white australians voted against.
Its ongoing and alive and well! |

Most issues are those promoted/created by the media for news value.
Unfortunately in some areas multiculturalism is marred by the high incidence of one ethnic group without interest in integration.
The same issues that have existed in the UK are now arising here. |

The actual problem is the majority of Aussie hate change. Most society accept change at the minimal of 3 years. With Aussie it take a minimum of 20 years. It took 20 years to accept the immigrant worker of the snowy mountain scheme. It took 20 years before the Aussies stop referring to the Vietnamese refugees as boat people. At the moment it is the middle eastern refugees copping the abused .This abuse can be seen as a initiation trial period to became called a Aussie. Generally I taking about 15% of the population that act in this manner. Mosty Aussie are friendly, good hearted people who love a piss up. |

Lots.
First, the hideous treatment of aboriginal people, and now the issues with Asians, Arabs and others.
But, having also lived in Canada and the US, I can say that all three countries are equally guilty.
So anyone who picks out Aus as racist should just go and look in the bleedin' mirror.
Just my 2 cents. |

The fact that most Australians and past governments still treat the original owners and carers of this land ( the Aboriginals ) as second class citizens speaks for itself. |
