Go in the beginning of summer, or in the end of summer.
Don't get stuck in the hot days.. |

Go in February as most ppl are back at work and schools have started again after the annual summer holidays ( less holiday traffic on the roads ). If you intend to see both islands I suggest you start at the bottom of the South island and work your way up to the north, daily temperatures will sort of remain constant that way, around sea level places anyway. There are many agricultural uni's and animal welfare places there so sus out a NZ gov't or education site. Have fun ! |

The best thing to do would be to backpack. They have some really inexpensive hostels and they are everywhere. If you go in Nov. and start in Auckland or 100 mile beach that would put you on the south island in Dec/Jan, the nicest time of year. Plus that is before the North Island gets to terribly hot. |

I cant answer the veterinary question, but I can say this:
When considering "best time of the year" consider this: New Zealand's summer is in November December and January, like North Americas Summer is in June July and August.
New Zealands winter, then, is during NA's summer. So, use whatever you know about animal health care, and maybe go in the summer for New Zealand, if that is when the animal shelters might be busiest? I dont know if thats true about shelters in general, but you might. lol. |

I live in Otago, Southern New Zealand. My region is the coldest one in New Zealand, and I would think it wise to go by when it's nicest here, because it would necessarily be even warmer everywhere else then. That time of year is from December till April, which is Indian Summer here, merging into autumn. It tends to be really sunny and dry then, with temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius in coastal regions (though nights can be chilly, especially in the mountains). As for Vet Tec, yes, it's big here. There are sheep everywhere. But if you are planning to work here, you will have to come in on the right kind of visa, and make sure your qualifications have been evaluaed and accredited by the authorities first (lots of red tape here, but pretty mellow otherwise). Check out the official website of NZIS, the New Zealand Immigation Service. I think it's www.NZIS.gov.nz but I could be wrong. |
