What to buy someone who is emergrating from UK to Sydney, Australia? |
One of my work colleagues is going to emergrate to Australia in a weeks time. We should have about £50 to spend and we are conscious that he isn't going to want anything that will take up space and be difficult to take on the plane. He is a fan of surfing and wondered whether there are any popular shops in Sydney that sell vouchers online which we could buy beforehand and then present to him next week? Anyone got any ideas? |

For our boss who moved to Oz, we got him some vouchers for local tourist sites etc there - most people arrive in new places and will be doing the touristy bit. You can buy them online (check Sydney guides for ideas). Or vouchers for a nice restaurant in Sydney to celebrate his arrival? My other thought is getting him something that he can't get over there once he's moved.
Try posting this question on gumtree.com - site that lot's of aussies use so they might be able to suggest a shop for the vouchers. |

Not sure about what to buy ahead of time. But we had friends who moved from the U.S. to South Africa for a few years, and we sent a care package a few months later that had items in it that they couldn't get there. They absolutely adored it and spoke of it often even after they returned home. It had been a welcome taste of the U.S. while they were so far away.
I'm not sure if that would apply in this case, as you might be able to get anything in Australia that you could get in the UK. But think of it in terms of any move someone might make. Perhaps a gift certificate from a housewares store in Australia would be helpful. |

Doyle's fish restaurant is the best in Sydney. you can defiantly get vouchers. a guide book would also be use full and i agree with just getting dollars. |

An excellent idea.
You can forget the return ticket, the dictionary and what ever else they said except the slip slop slap. Great idea

An mp3 player (doubt your £50 would stretch to an iPod) and fill it with men at work, INXS, Midnight Oil and Rolf Harris classics. |

What a great idea! Maybe to go with the voucher, you could give him a bottle of sunscreen, a sunhat, and a tee shirt that you have all signed. The UV index is VERY high in Australia, especially for someone from the UK, and one of the most popular slogans down under is Slip Slop Slap -- slip on a shirt, slop on the sunscreen and slap on a hat, as protection again sunstroke and skin cancer.
Maybe instead of a voucher from a particular shop in Sydney, you could give him a money order, so he could shop around the many surf shops in Sydney and get exactly what he wants. You could even go to the bank and get it in Australian dollars, if you wanted. It's fun money -- it has little transparent windows in it!
NOTE: That's 'fun' money, not 'funny' money. |
