I wonder what the indigenous people called it?

fruitsalad
Van Diemens Land, New Holland, and Terra Australis are all names it was called.

Iceman
Australia was called New Holland by the Dutch and New South Wales by the british. Van Diemen's Land was Tasmania.

Ok, just to correct some answers, Australia was not called Van Diemens Land - Tasmania was (Tasmania is the small Australian island state to the south of the main continent). I should know - I come from there.

Previously to being called Australia, it was called New Holland by the Dutch.

New Holland and when Captain Cook came ashore in North Queensland and hoisted the Union Jack on Australian soil to claim it for the British for King George III (after having been stuck at what is now Cooktown for six weeks to repair the damaged Endeavour) he called it New South Wales.

It was founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian mainland, as well as Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. New Zealand was not initially part of the colony, although when Britain annexed New Zealand in 1840 it was briefly a part of New South Wales. During the 19th century large areas were successively separated to form the British colonies of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and New Zealand.

Matthew Flinders in particular referred (to what is now known as) Australia as Terra Australis.

It may well have been Flinders who was "instrumental" in New Holland/N.S.W. being renamed Australia later on.
Was it ever called Australia prior to federation in 1901?

Inhabitants of New South Wales are referred to as being New South Welsh or New South Welshmen.

Tasmania (Van Diemens Land until 1856) was settled in 1803 and Hobart (Originally named Hobarton) and Launceston (Originally named Patterson) became Australia's second and third oldest cities after Sydney.
