The Bold Street Bridge, Granville, site of the 18 Jan 1977 disaster when a train derailed and brought down 570 tonnes of bridge, killing 83 people and injuring 203.
I remember this and live only a few kilometres away.
Not a natural dister, but a preventable one.
Granville Train Disaster
Jan 18 - Tuesday started as an ordinary working day in Sydney. Then at 8:12am, a city-bound commuter train from Mt Victoria in the Blue Mountains, running three minutes late, leaves the tracks and ploughs into the Bold Street bridge at Granville.
Seconds later, the impact of the collision causes a 380 tonne section of the bridge to collapse, crushing the train's first four carriages. Many die where they sit in a space reduced to less than 50cm.
83 passengers lose their lives and 213 are injured in a disaster that's destined to leave lifelong physical and emotional scars for the rescued and rescuers alike. A young nurse, Margaret Warby, makes her way back again and again into the wreckage to help survivors and is later awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for her heroism that day. |

*I can find nothing specific to sydney this is the best I can find so far I will keep looking~
In March 1899, the devastation caused by Cyclone Mahina resulted in the greatest death toll of any natural disaster in our history with over 400 people loosing their lives. The cyclone decimated a pearling fleet at Bathurst Bay in Queensland and the crews of around 100 vessels and an estimated 100 local aborigines were among the dead |

Well, actually in Australia there have been natural disasters.
The city of Darwin was completely devastated by cyclone Tracy in 1974.
A few weeks ago some territories of North Queensland and Western Australia have been damaged because of cyclones and floods. There are tropical regions in Australia. It is normal to have this problems.
Well, in general I think that Australia is a safe country. No wars, low criminality...It is a really good place to live, I think.
I don't know about disasters happened in Sydney...I just heard about the riots. Do you want my opinion about these riots? In Europe we have much worse things.
That's why I really feel safe in Australia. |

Some of the people that answer on here probably weren't born yet or were either to young to remember, But Sydney had the Hilton hotel bombing a very long time ago everything was somewhat peaceful until the Cronulla riots, Apart from the general crap and accidents. We also had riots at Macquarie Fields and at Redfern |

We have floods.. heaps or cyclones.. Cyclone Tracy was a big hit! WE have had massacres where crazy people walk into cafes and SHOOT everyone in sight!
We are having one hell of a drought right now!.. the cows are dying.. we have water restrictions everywhere.. can only water the plants three times a week..
We have floods in some parts of the country.. most of our land is dried and useless.. well.. it's resource rich.. but we can't live on the land.. too arid. Sydney i must say is safe.. not much in terms of natural disasters happen there! GOooo SyDnEy!!! |

The Granville train disaster is probably the biggest single tragedy. There has only been one terrorist act in recent times - in early Eighties a bomb was left outside the Hilton hotel in Sydney in an attempt to assasinate the Indian prime minister. It failed and killed a garbage collector. |
