geez there's some ignorant thickos on this system. sydney was founded by captain arthur phillip in january 1788, the first permanent european settlement on the continent.

captain james cook mapped the east coast of the continent in 1770 and landed at botany bay to explore the country and to get some fresh water. he first named the bay stingray harbour but the botanists on board collected so many specimens the name was changed. botany bay is a few miles south of sydney. cook noted what are now called sydney heads but did not sail in. he did not found any cities.

my ancestor john love arrived as a soldier in sydney in 1791 with his wife and children. we've been on the continent ever since, mostly on but occasionally off.

I reckon it was Sydney.

Wasn't "The Rocks" the original penal institution?

What was the first city founded in New Zealand? ;o)
