What was your cheapest way to get to Australia?

You might try http://www.pinpointtravel.com or go to SlickDeals.net to check for airfares. Or go to The Age (Melbourne) or The Sydney Morning Herald to look for deals.

We lived in Melbourne for five years, and had wonderful times there and in our travels around the country. Great people! Don't forget Tasmania, by the way. Taking the Spirit of Tasmania ferry overnight there from Melbourne is a fun way to travel and the countryside is beautiful. The ferry has sleeping berths, or you can sit up in the lounge for the night. Uluru/Ayers Rock and is wonderful, though Alice Springs, where you'd probably stay, is a bit iffy (at night).

If you don't like the airfares to Australia, try New Zealand. You can hit the beaches on the North Island, then check out a glacier on the South.

It's summer Down Under! Have fun!

P.S. Don't try Aussie talk when you get there. Sure, people sometimes call others 'mate' and so on, but it sounds funny coming in a non-Australian accent. And don't call girls 'sheilas'- it's an insult!

the cheapest fare I got last year was with Thomas Cook. I flew from Dublin to Frankfurt with Aer lingus and then Frankfurt to Singapore with Qantas. i changed plane there and took another Qantas to Brisbane, Australia. I hated Frankfurt airport. stuck there for hours and there was nothing to do. qantas were crap - horrible food and very squashed . Wouldn't fly with them again. Ten years ago I flew with Garuda Indonesia from Paris. We had a stop off for refuelling at Abu Dhabi, which was great to discover. we then flew on to Singapore and stayed there 3 days. We flew from Singapore to Bali and got a flight there for brisbane. Although their reputation wouldn't be as good as Qantas, they were far superior in my opinion -friendly, nice food, good leg room etc. have a good time.

I flew for £1000 with a stop-over in Singapore. We could have gone for £650 ish without a stop-over, on a mid-week flight (Wednesdays are cheaper). That was leaving in July returning late August.
So a mid-week, non-stopover flight is cheapest. Then just use a really cheap airline - ie. not Singapore airlines (we flew with them, service was brilliant, and excellent value, but there are cheaper options), or British Airways (renowned for being a rip-off) etc.

Being born here was probably the cheapest.
