A place you should really try to get to before you die - although this applies to many spots in NZ. |

If you've been to Yellowstone Park you probably wouldn't find it as interesting.
For people who haven't had the opportunity to visit a thermal area, it would have lots for them to see and do.
Yes, the area often has the smell of sulphur but not always, and you do get used to it - after a day or so you wouldn't notice it.
Apart from the thermal sites, there's the Maori cultural attractions, a luge, trout fishing, bush walks, etc. |

Hell's Gate.
Lovely place, even Hell's Gate has a certain beauty and charm. You might want to take a scarf to cover your nose and mouth though!! |

When I was a kid, we used to go there for holidays and my dad and I used to call it Rottenrua...
Obviously because of the smell, despite that it's a very pretty place.. |

As they say below, it is a bit smelly from the sulphur, but you get used to that. There are also a lot of tourists in Rotovegas, but it is still worth going to. Whakarewarewa is good as a first stop to see the mud pools especially if you are not a NZer and are also looking to find out a bit more about Maori culture. The best pools though I think are at Wai-o-Tapu, about ten minutes down the road towards Taupo. If you have added time also check out Waimunga Thermal Valley. A must do, which will get you out of town is Mt Tarawera. When we went you could do a half day four wheel drive trip up there. The crater is amazing and you can run down it. |

Sulpher and porridge lol.. the mud pools look like boiling oatmeal. It's kinda sad though that a lot of the thermal activity has died down due to greed. It used to be much more spectacular 20 years ago. Parts of it are beautiful though, with the caves and some of the prettier parts even though the 8th wonder of the world was destroyed 120 years ago.
