An average Aussie is just like an average Brit or American. We're just as normal as each other but with different accents.
A Stereotypical Australian would wear a hat with corks, stubbies, a flanny shirt, $2 thongs, VB in hand, BBQ tongs in the other. A real outback/bogan Australian. |

I am Australian, we are pretty friendly, but yes you may get some small sarcastic comments if you are from the USA, (probably due to George Bush) we laugh at everything - even ourselves so no need to take anything seriously down here. Come and visit us! |

I love how Marie tried to make out that she was Australian! It amazes me that people say that Australians are convicts and yet England also sent convict ships to America. As for the rest of the stuff she went on with ..... she has serious grounds for suing her goverment for the disgraceful education she received (or rather did not receive).
What do you mean "average Australian do and be like"???? You obviously want someone to answer like Marie and say they are all awful and by asking such a question you are the one being awful. By asking such a question you are behaving in the manner in which you question Australians.
People can comment about the Aboriginals, immigrants, etc. I could do the same for every country. The Indians, the Africans - yep they had a lovely time at the hands of "whites"!
And as for Immigrants, they have an awful time in a lot of countries.
This is not to excuse Australia - but to single them out is ridiculous and shows a lack of education. Which Australia by the way ranks in the top 5 in the world. |

What a load of Sh*t - some of the comments made about Australia are not true or fair. I am a first generation Australian - my parent immigrated from Europe in the 50's & 60's and yes I have been called a wog and I dont look like the so called 'white' Australian - but we are a mulicultural society and as Aussies we embrace all people. The problem is that some of these people that come to this country want to impose their ways on the rest of the community.
My parents still speak with a strong accents yet we we bought up to respect our neighbours and when someone was rude we got over it. My family worked hard to assimulate into the community whilst still holding traditions within the home and extended family. Something I continue with today with my two children.
There are many different people that come here and stick only to their own groups making it hard for themselves to learn the language and make friends with everyone else. They come here and they are the racist ones !!! talk about ungrateful.
I am a business owner and I have 2 employees of Asian backgroud who are well educated but were finding it hard to get employment - I can understand why - their spoken English was terrible. I decided that they needed a go and gave them a job - they now speak 1000 times better than they previously did - I encourage them to socialise with other people and they are better for it - they have said so themselves..
So to all the knocker and racist immigrants - if you dont like it - you are welcome to leave.
If you appreciate this beautiful country and all the opportunities it provides then get on with it - get to know your neighbour, work colleague - go to the local RSL or pub and start making friends - the world wont come to you - you need to go and get it. |

I can only speak for myself and the people I know, but we're all average Australians and are very interested in and welcoming to people from other places. I think you would find that most Australians are like that. We 'take the mickey' out of everyone, but other Aussies aren't exempt from that and most of us can take it as well as dish it out. If we rubbish your accent, well, you can rubbish ours too and in fact we'll expect you to do that.
What we all hate is when people come from other places and criticise Australia because it's different from wherever they come from. Some people come here and seem to want it to be just like home in every way except with better weather. If that's the case, I can't understand why they waste their money on travelling to Australia - it would be cheaper to stay at home and we wouldn't have to put up with them. |

I am an average Australian, with all-white blood tracing back to english settlers.
I would not care what country you were from at all. One of my best friends was a Germen exchange student. Australians like to make fun, but thats what it really is, fun. We joke alot and sometimes foreigners don't get that its funny, thats all.
We are friendly people, at least the people I know are. I only hate idiots, and materialistic girls. |

You have to READ this... Just sharing my story...
It depends on the areas and surroundings you're in. It's true that every country has its good and bad apples. I just completed a 2-year program at a technical institute in Melbourne, and I'm still in touch with my fellow Aussie friends. There are locals who act like a stereotypical Aussie yet there are some who don't. Generally, they are warm and open towards people from overseas BUT there are plenty of ignorant ones as well who usually hang around isolated streets.
I've had my fair share of discrimination but not as much as my other friends since I speak 'American' (I don't live in America but I was raised in an American community in my hometown). But sometimes I bumped into locals who make fun of America, so they cut the conversation short upon learning I have an American accent. Another friend of mine who also speaks the same way as I do was discriminated for having that same accent in her classes. Like, there was a group discussion and she was among three other people (one was a local Aussie, another was from China/Taiwan and the other one was from Singapore). The local Aussie guy who found out my friend speaks American completely ignored her. He was friendly in the first place.
Hmm.... it certainly depends on the people you meet. Some are good, some are ignorant. |
