Didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this question!

1976 as part of a job-creation scheme, sponsored by Fosters larger. It was going to be called Foster Rock, but this was challenged by Sylvester Ayers who argued in court that it was his idea to paint it red, not blue and yellow as originally planned.

He's gone fishing.

ayers rock was built at the same time as the eiffel tower and the statue of liberty by the same group of irish and scottish immigrant workers in 1867 - everyone knows that right ! ........

edit- taj mahal and the hanging gardens of babylon were done by the same lot a bit later too.

it wasn't man made... it was formed over 450 million years ago....
It was first FOUND by an explorer in 1872 but formed a long time before that under the ocean from sand...
