Cronulla,

I totally agree with you.
A better version of Bondi in my opinion,
Less crowded, more localized, friendlier and generally better.

Cronulla and Manly are my two highest choices.

Bondi and Coogee are way over-rated. Too crowded, too dirty, not very good surf and their ice-cream tastes like poo!

Manly is substantially bigger than Cronulla with all the greenery as well and then there's the sheltered cove of Shelly beach at its southern end in the rough weather so it seems to meet your criteria best so I guess that would be my pick although most critics of this would be party to some sort of wierd us/them, northern/southern beaches sort of split which is really pretty moronic.

Most people will tell you Bondi, which is nice, but everyone knows about it so it is crowded. Several beaches just north of Bondi, which can be reached via a waterfront walkway, are smaller and more secluded; you feel like you're on your own private beach. One of the next big beaches after them is Cronulla, which is also nice and not as crowded. North of Sydney is Manly Beach, which is also popular but much larger so not as crowded.

If someone really had a genuine answer, they wouldn't tell you, since that means they wait longer for waves.
