Whats the best way to see the Great Barrier Reef if you can't get in the water? |
My wife doesn't swim well and prefers to not have to go in the water. I only have 2 days in Cairns. What can you recommend? |

You should be lucky that I have seen this question...cause I live in beautiful Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia...you will love it here...the weather at the moment is just wonderful!!!
If your wife doesnt swim then I suggest that you book a day out with Sunlover Cruises...they will take you to a pontoon on the reef and from there you have lunch and you can then swim, dive or take a ride in a glass bottom boat. Another good company is Quicksilver Cruises which also offers the same services. I have been with both and I have to say that Quicksilver was more impressive for me...but please bear in mind that I do dive and am able to access much more of the reef than someone who doesnt swim...
you can also take day trips out to a few islands...there are two main ones...Fitzroy Island and Green Island...I would recommend Fitzroy Island of the two...it has a great beach called Nudey Beach...and yes, it is legal for you to be nude on this beach...some people do but most dont...you can snorkel on some reef, take a kyak around the island or walk up to a light house for a spectacular view (take some good shoes!)...
if your wife doesnt want to go anywhere near the water then you can take a chartered flight over the reef and the islands....there is a link for this below also...
you really wont see a lot this way...a lot of water in different shades of blue and green...sandkeys and islands...you really have to get in the water to appreciate the reef...there are colors that you have never seen before...
There are a few websites below that should help you make up your mind...there bottom one is just an over view of the region...
I love living where I do...I have moved overseas to America and became a citizen but I just couldnt stay away from Cairns...or Australia in general for that matter...where else are you going when you are here? I have travelled everywhere pretty much...north, south, east and west coasts of Australia...feel free to modify your question if you want to know more...
have so much fun when you are here...you will love it i am sure!!! |

bad news for you dude the Great Barrier Reef is in/surrounded by water fly over or a boat is the only other option |

I guess by taking one of those aerial tours of the Great Barrier Reef. I'd rather do that, too, instead of be in the water. |

I have heard that paragliding, or one of those parachutes that are dragged by a boat. It could be fun.
Have a good time! |

I can't swim either but that doesn't matter when you snorkel. Get her to practice in shallow water and build up her confidence. She will be fine, and will be amazed when she snorkels over the reef. |

I know in the caribbean they have boat cruises that you can go on so I'm sure they have it there to do (some have glass bottomed boat so you can see through the bottom) And some places they have submarines tours. I would probably go with the submarine tour. I know all the ones in the carribbean are operated by Atlantis. |

See if you can go on one of those boats with the glass bottoms. Try this link.
