get a bus - greyhound or one of the many other backpacker tour buses that there are. You don't need to book any transport until you get out there. When you check in your first hostel you'll be inundated with offers of transport and tours to your next destination. If you're not go to YHA Sydney Central backpackers next to central station in Sydney and look at the deals they have in their travel office.

yeah I would say walk - but I don;t think you mean that?

Get in touch with www.airlinenetwork.co.uk even if you're not in the UK they can provide you with a multi-stop ticket, that gives you 3, 4 or 5 stops, so you can fly from one place to another - when you want.

You could hitch rides, but that would be a little dangerous.

drive and camp. we bought a van, used it for 5 months, and sold it for only $200 dollars less than we paid for it. It's worth paying $50 for a mechanic to check it over if you take this option.
you can also then give people lifts for petrol money on long journeys too.
