As an Australian, it made me a little embarressed. It reinforces these cultural stereotypes (that we all live in the out back, where corks on our hats and spradiocally cry "crikey"). It makes me cringe, but from a tourism perspective, this is our image in the world, and it gets a hellava lot of people to our shores.
Australia, genrally, is not like the ad, we are a lot more cultured than the stereotype. But i doubt wether that side of society will ever get as many poms on planes as the chance to hold a koala and point at a roo does.... |

Yeah, the "bloody" in the statement really highlights the Australian stereotype and makes those far away want to see this exciting/ different culture for themselves:P |

I'm Australian, and I don't like it; I'm actually rather embarrassed by it. The expression "bloody hell" has worked its way into informal slang in Australia, but could still be considered offensive in other English-speaking countries. Many of my American, British and Canadian friends have seen the advertisements and were offended by the coarseness of the phrase. I think it was rather culturally insensitive; in my opinion, it demonstrates that Tourism Australia didn't research the linguistic history of the phrase outside Australia enough, if at all. |
