Yes I do, I think if we concentrated more on our own problems instead of bailing everyone else out we could wipe out child abuse unemployment and homelessness. As already said charity begins at home. |

LOL I am Australian.
The really sad thing is, there are less fortunate people in every country all over the world. We do need to help. |

Wow! there are some seriously deluded Aussies on here who think we are all equally fortunate just because we are Australian. Get your heads out of the sand and think about others who are less fortunate. |

You should have a look at all the homeless people sleeping on the benches outside my work in the centre of Perth in the early morning.
No joke, check out the soup kitchen queues in the Park opposite the Education Dept's silver city or next to St Andrews Church in Pier St at 7am.
There are waiting lists for hostels in Perth and a 4 year wait for homewest housing according to last week's newspaper.
Most of us are doing really well, but there is a growing number of destitute, and it can't just be grog that doing it to them.
And that's not even considering the outback aboriginal communities that according to newspaper reports two years ago child sponsor groups wanted to advertise overseas for sponsors which caused a considerable amount of consternation here and lead to a few government enquiries trying to prove that they were not living in third world conditions. We ended up sending the army in to build houses and clean up these communities. I think the then Government blamed the communities in the end for causing their own problems and the army was needed to put them in order. |

I tend to think of my fellow Australians all year round, not just "christmas". There are some truly disadvantaged people living in this country. Working in healthcare I get to see it every day.
I work with people who have had traumatic childhoods, being raped at a very young age, started sniffing glue at the age of four, people who never knew a safe and happy childhood . Some of us truly do not know how lucky we are.
Charity does start at home. |

Of course. I am going to be thinking about people in my own country before I think about everyone else in the world. |

Are you kidding me? I want to move to Australia! They are so friendly and laid back - much more welcoming than people quite honestly here in the US. And they have got a booming economy right now compared to the United States which is going down the drain. The only downside I hear, is that Australia is about 30 years behind the US/UK like industrially or something? Idk...but the Australian way of life seems quite splendid in my opinion! |

No, I think of all the countries less fortunate that Australia and the homeless, like in America and the like. |

Nuh ! Australia is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet ! The poorest of the poor here is filthy rich compared to most in the third world..
I think of the people who live their lives not knowing whether or not they can feed their families from one day to the next..places like most of Africa & a large part of the Asian continent...

OI! i live in Australia and i would wonder why on earth would anyone think of us as less fortunate????
i honestly have no idea why anyone would think that, we're a first world country, and we are no less advantaged than anyother first world country. we dont have areas of exreme poverty or out of the norm social problems. obviously there are SOME Australians who are less advantaged than others, just like in any country, it would be stupid to think everyone is equal.
but i do wonder what you would mean when thinking of Australians as less fortunate? in what regard do you mean? do you think we have some form of social problem that no one else has told us about? because i cant think of anything thats out of the ordinary. |

Whoa, never, i think of children in India, Africa, third world countries, on the streets with their parents beside their homes made out of cardboard boxed begging for people who can't or won't give them money or give them very little that they beg to the next passer by |

Yes, because being a first world country that's wealthier then the United States, makes us so less fortunate... Idiot.
Least we're not in a recession.
EDIT - Come to think of it, when I think of those less fortunate, I think of Americans and how unfortunate they are to not have a fully developed or functional brain. |

I think people from Africa would be more appropriate. |

Australians may be less fortunate in some ways, but they do not lack for THINGS, consumer goods and heaps of food (Too much food in fact, just like the Americans). We may lack understanding of other cultures despite our multicultural claims. (And we're very racist towards some groups) but we don't lack the basics of life! |
