Like all countries in the southern hemisphere (the hemisphere south of the Equator), Australia's seasons follow the sequence:
Summer: December to February
Autumn: March to May
Winter: June to August
Spring: September to November
This means that the Australian Christmas takes place at the height of summer. It also means that the mid-year break for students happens in winter. The end of year break for students is commonly known as the 'summer holidays', or the 'Christmas holidays'. |

Summer is officially from December 1 until the end of February. As Australia is a large country with diverse regions and climate patterns it is best to check the particular area you wish to travel to. For example, summer is great in Sydney although somewhat humid but it is wet season in the tropics such as Cairns, Darwin etc |

Late November - March. Northern Australia is tropical and thus has significantly less seasonal variations than the temperate south. |
