There are so many things to do and see in the Canberra region but, for free, these are my 10 things to do and see (but just like what another answerer said - getting to them may involve some cost.)
1) The National Museum. ----This is a MUST! You will learn a lot about Australia.
2) A tour of the Parliament House
3) The Australian War Memorial. (and a walk along ANZAC Parade) ----Excellent presentations. Won many tourism awards
4) The National Gallery
5) Bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin, picnic lunch ANYWHERE along the foreshore or at Commonwealth Park. Come during mid-September to mid_October and see Floriade (lots of tulips and flowers) at the park. People come from all over the world specifically to see Floriade
6) National Capital exhibition at Regatta Point, next to Commonwealth Park. It shows how Canberra came into existence as a planned city plus a lot of interesting facts and local history.
7) A drive up Mount Ainslie (behind The Australian War Memorial) --- See virtually the whole of Canberra from up there. (Black Mountain Tower also has a view but it is not free)
8) A leisurely walk exploring Canberra CBD (Civic) ---- you might come across some local artwork on the pavement, a sculpture or two along the promenade. Lots of photo opportunities. Free activity but you have to pay for your own icecream.
9) Mount Kosciuszko ----- a few hours drive from Canberra. Hike up the highest peak on Australian mainland in summer. You probably won't be able to get up there in winter but snow is free. Along the way there are more places to explore.
10) At night, stand at the end of Anzac Parade and look across the lake and you will be presented with a great photo opportunity of the National Gallery, the High Court of Australia, Commonwealth Place, and the National Library as they all lit up in various colours. Then go across the lake and look back to get a photo of the lit up War Memorial and the Anzac Parade.
That's my ten - but have a look here for more ideas.

In Sydney and around Sydney, just a few ideas:::
(obviously there may be transporation costs to these places bus, train, ferry etc)
- Circular Quay which is basically the part of Sydney Harbour with the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
- Bondi Beach, about 35 minutes on a bus from Circular Quay bus station
- The Rocks area is right near Circular Quay, right at the foot of the Harbour Bridge basically. One of many vistors centre located here
- Walk across the Harbour Bridge on the pedestrian pathway. Check for access points at a visitors centre or on a map of the Rocks area.
- Sydney Olympic Park, home of the 2000 Olympics. Able to walk around have a look at the stadiums etc. Take the train from the city to olympic park
- St Mary's Cathedral in the city, entry is free and there are free tours avaliable on Sundays at noon.
- There's free entry to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Australian National Maritime Museum. (check the internet or vistors centres for locations of each.
- A great coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach
- Royal Botanic Gardens are just a short walk from the Opera House
- A day trip to the Blue Mountains. The mountains are about 2 hours on a train from Central station in Sydney city. The town of Katoomba in the mountains is the home of the Three Sisters (rock formation) and many bushwalks. |
