In 1770, captain cook descovered the coast of Australia. But Aborigines really are the owners of this land, Dna testing found that they were in Australia ages before that.

Elliot
Certainly more than fifty-thousand years ago. The exact date isn't known.

If, for some absurd reason, you aren't including indigenous Australians or the indigenous populations of the islands immediately north of Australia, then it was discovered in 1606 by the Dutch.

Sheltie7
For around 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606,the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

You cant say when Australia was discovered. Becuase it was discovered by aboriginals, and that is not written in books.

Tim N
The first people in Australia arrived more than 40,000 years ago.

In terms of discovery by Europeans, Australia was NOT dicovered by Captain Cook. The first European to land in Australia was probably William Janszoon in 1606, though he thought he was still in New Guinea.

WINDOWLICKER
It's not specifically known, as many travellers came to Australia throughout history. in 1603 an Italian mapped Australia. His name was Matteo Ricci
