Where's the best place to hang out in New Zealand for a feww months?

I want to work out there for a few months, so it needs to be somewhere near a big-ish city. Also, it would be great to be close to the beach. I want to be close to lots of exciting activities too! And of course, somewhere that's beautiful. Anyone been to New Zealand and got any recommendations?

Live just out of Auckland city, then you can get the best of both worlds.. There are so many beaches and beach towns in and near Auckland..which is called the City of Sails. There are also islands that you can take a boat to near Auckland. So many things to do.. You can even live on Waiheke Island. Or.. you can go over the Harbor bridge to the North Shore and go to all the beach towns over there.

Just a reminder.. it's better to put this question in the NZ section as Australia and NZ are separate countries! It's like putting USA in the Canada section!?? And there's a big ocean that separates the 2 down under countries.
