Kangaroos and wallabies are just about everywhere other than the really large cities. I live in town of 100,000+ people and yeah Ive seen them in the outer suburbs having a lovely time munching into peoples yummy flowers. Whether you see them depens on a couple of things
1. being aware of what is going on around you
2. going out of a night (when they are most active)
3. is there food in the area ie grasses/ edible plants.
Roos are a bit of hazard as they weigh a fair bit and do a LOT of damage to a car (hence the Aussie fixation with "Bull bars" on every rural vehicle) so if you are ever driving of a night in a rural area be careful. |

Not in the cities, but they are very common in most rural areas that aren't completely barren desert. I live for part of the year on 4 acres 100 km outside Melbourne, and they commonly visit, especially early in the morning.
Australia is a big place. Ask locally where and when you're most likely to see them. They're most active in the early morning and early evening, and you'll often find them around dams and waterholes when they come to drink.
But you can generally find them anywhere there is forest or unfenced grassland. |

You've got every reason to be excited, we're a great bunch of people and live in a fantastic country.
Kangaroos, you don't have to go far outside the city to see them in the wild. That's why most people in the country areas have roo bars fitted to the front of their vehicles.
(A bullbar, roo bar or nudge bar in Australia, is a device fitted to the front of a vehicle to protect it and its passengers from damage in a collision with an animal. Kangaroos account for over 60% of animal collisions in Australia)
You're really better off getting close to kangaroos and wallabies in a zoo or nature park. Australia Zoo, on the Sunshine Coast, is worth a visit. |

I live on the East Coast of Australia.
You can email me via Yahoo Answers if you wish, I would be happy to assist you.
I have kangaroos, wallabies, possums, koalas, goannas, kookaburras, magpies, snakes, you name it, all right here in my very own backyard. Almost every single day of the week. And more than one! |

Ummmmm......
Actually I DID see a roo on the way to the shops the other day! We have a large tract of bushland near us that seems to have a large variety of animals in it. I live about 25 mins from the city centre too, so I am not out in the sticks somewhere. You still get roos on golf-courses. Mostly however they are in "the outback"outside the cities. |

One just hopped past my house !!!!
Seriously kangaroos and wallaby's are everywhere in Australia - just watch it driving, especially at night I'd hate for you to hit and kill one and it has a baby in the pouch ....
:-(
oh and if you get hungry you can buy kangaroo meat in the butcher dept in your local supermarket here. |

They are every flamin' where. Travel any highway and you will see dead ones along the side of the road. With the exception of urban areas, there is no where I have been without roos.
Presently I live in south west NSW and there are plenty of them, and big ones at that.
If you want to see big reds, go to the desert, such as Broken Hill. Beware that travelling at dusk or night can be dangerous. Those big suckers just jump right out in front of moving automobiles. |

interesting question, contrary to popular belief, kangaroos do not populate suburban cities and towns. We do not see them when we go shopping or out for a walk, in fact, I would count the time since I last saw one in years!!!
Of course, they are in all the zoos and fairly densly populated in central Australia. I used to live in Adelaide, South Australia, where there is perhaps more white pointers than kangaroos, then I drove up to Darwin, Northern Territory to live and saw hundreds on the way up. I now live on the east coast and am yet to see any, perhaps if I took a trip to the local ranges I may find some. Although they are not as prevalent as our tourism campaigns make out, they are also never too far away..... |
