On the east coast, well pretty much anywhere though between Byron Bay and Hervey Bay is probably the best stretch. It depends on what else you want to do, eg Byron has a nice lighthouse (and land based view point), the Moreton Bay islands like Stradbroke and Moreton, much like Fraser near Hervey Bay have the island life and some (either Stradbroke or Moreton) have high points to see whales swimming past.
Down in South Australia (someone above mentions Victor Harbour) some whales like the Southern Wright Whale come in for birthing.
WA does have whales (like Humpbacks) but over on Ningalu reef they have whale sharks (yes I know, technically a shark but they are as big as a whale and are no threat per say to humans ie they're not going to chomp you in half) |

Fleurieu Peninsula. Try between Goolwa, Port Elliot, Middleton and Victor Harbour South Australia. Goolwa is a former whaling port and the Southern Right whales return there regularly. Fascinating ! |

Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) in Qld, and Albany, in Western Australia's south west. |

there are many parts of australia where you can see whales,
whales tend to show up around sydney and basically along the coastline of queensland. you can also see some from the coast at adelade.
i hope this helps! |

They migrate up and down the east coast, so anywhere from Wilsons Promontory north to Hervey Bay at the right time of year. They also hang out in the Great Australian Bight. In the west, Cape Naturaliste sticks out into a migration route, so you can see whales there, including blue whales if you are lucky. |

I just recently went whale watching for the first time on the Gold Coast with SeaWorld. We saw heaps of whales and their calves migrating back down south - most of them were very active and were breaching, tail slapping and seemed to be having fun. I got some amazing footage and I was pretty impressed with the tour. |

They claim that Hervey Bay is the whale capital of the Australia. However, you can see whales in many places during the winter months. |

We watch them from mum's balcony on Nth Stradbroke Island (Point Lookout), they're in closest when they're heading south with their calves. If you want to see them close up from a boat though Hervey Bay is your best bet. |
