Where can I find local art in Tasmania?

I really enjoy discovering local art & craft work and I will be visiting Tasmania in February for 2 weeks so wondered if there was any art trails I could do while I was there.

The person above me got it right! Down in Salamanca you can pick up some beautiful art works!! The art museum is right there as well.
The best thing about Tasmania is all you have to do is pull over and ask someone. We are really friendly and more than welcome to help you!! <Try asking the young teenagers - they know heaps of quicker ways to get around>

Also there is information buildings where you pull over and they have maps and everything. Usually there is someone working there that can point you in the right direction!!

Have fun in Tassie!! I love it here!!!

i live southern tas definately check out the musemum way smaller than say melbourne but worth a look (*its free) salamanca markets on a saturday is excellent spot for artists it like a buskers paridise down there but trust me not in ur face buskers i have bought many paintings and such from there they are famous people just not discovered yet the buskers are great if i could have a record company i would sign them on but for pure art i would try there the other place would be richmond a tassie must see gaols (as once spelled) mazes the famous richmond lolly factory (the best!) old fashioned photos the best (u feel like ur in the 1950 again) if u want more hands on tassie history then contact melissa_laurence@hotmail.com.au i am a mum of three married and have travelled most of the state the blow hole and devils kitchen is not to be missed so if u want more then feel free to contact me happy to help the tassie tourists not to miss the best spots!

There are a few ways you can head if you're after an "art trail", rather than centralised local arts & crafts. If you're flying into Hobart, try a trip to Richmond, the Huon Valley or the D'Entrecasteaux Channel (the latter two are to the south of Hobart, Richmond is near the airport), alternatively up the Derwent River towards New Norfolk and on to Bushy Park. There are various arty pockets here and there.
I'm not quite as familiar with the North and North-West of the state, but you should find at least as much scope there for local art & craft.
As well as Salamanca market, also visit Salamanca Place and Hunter Street (on the opposite side of Hobart's port) on any day of the week and visit the huge number of small galleries which showcase a variety of local arts and crafts in many styles and for a wide range of budgets. There's a similar gallery near the city park in Launceston, and no doubt many others in smaller centres.
One fantastic art trail (I think it's still there!) is a sculpture trail on the Tasman Peninsula - you can see several dozen really interesting works in spectacular coastal locations, and also visit the blowhole, Tessalated pavement, Port Arthur etc. while you're there!
Happy travels...

Ho yea, you can find small villages (around the cities) with plenty of handcrafts. In the city center also.

you could try www.discovertasmania.com or maybe try some local council web sites they often have a list of what is on in their region . Hope it is of some help, make sure you dont limit yourself to one part as it vastly different for a little place. Enjoy a safe holiday in our beautiful state.

The great thing about Tassie is it's size - small. You can drive around the entire state in a day (not a very relaxing day mind you)

That means in two weeks, you can get around to most of it quite comfortably (but in my mind, Tassie has so much to offer you'd be better off with more time up your sleeve)
.
Just drop into the touist information center in each town and ask - they generally have heaps of information. Or just talk to the locals - we're pretty friendly.
