Where can I go for great food & wine in WA? |
I've heard of the Margaret River wine region but never been. Which little towns should I stop at and explore around there? |

Instead of going to Margaret River, you might want to consider Swan Valley. There are a few popular vineyards ie: Sandalford, Houghton, Ironbarks and many more. Most offer free wine tasting. If there is any charge they will be nominal. Sandalford serves nice lunches. Perthians most often flock to Swan Valley on the weekend for a small getaway. There are also Margaret River Chocolate Factory (not in Margaret River - they're in Swan valley) where you could buy some gourmet chocolates and try their chocolates for free.
Alternatively, try Mundaring (hill). There's The Loose Box French Restaurant (very expensive but nice) or Little Caesar's Restaurant, serving best gourmet pizza in the world.
In Perth, (A)llure at Burswood Casino or Must Winebar at Mt Lawley or Zafferano. |

margaret river is a beautiful region, i would stay closer to dunsborough though. the town itself has a lot more to offer than magaret river. good food and wine can be found all over the south west region, however becareful where you go, some places over charge for the quality and service you get. Wise winery has a fantastic menu, great food, good wine and good service. it is about 10 minutes drive out of dunsborough center. |

OK I was just gonna say margaret river lol. Umm you could go to dunsborough which is a really great classy holiday spot. There is a lot of wine in the swan valley, you could stay at The Vines Resort and go wine tasting and even on river cruises, boozy ones of course. |

You could actually save a lot of money by not going to Margaret River. There are good savings to be found on Margaret River wines in Perth and the food will definitely be better. Sad to say that the SW region is rapidly becoming a total rip-off for gullible people from the metro region who seem to love being being ripped off by greedy people. My last experience was that service is hopeless, cost exorbitant, opening hours unpredictable and quality very variable.
On a good point, there is some nice scenery if you can avoid the over-logged places that the WA government plunderers (DEC formerly known as CALM) try to hide. |

Definately Margaret river, Cowaramup, Vasse and Yalingup (for the beaches). If you love fudge and chocolate and cheese (with free tastings at each) go to the candy cow in Cowaramup, the cheese factories on Bussell hwy heading towards Busselton out of Cowaramup and the Margaret River chocolate company just off of Metricup Road. For great food and an awesome cab merlot go to Leeuwin Estate, or for good beer and entertainment Bootleg Brewery on Johnson road, for weird but wonderful beers go to Bush shack brewery on Helmsley road in Yallingup, for coffee, liquers (a good white chocolate one) go to The Grove vineyard on Metricup Road. Happs winery is great wines too.
Alot of the wineries average about $45 per main and you need to book especially on long weekends.
The beaches are beautiful and there are lots of caves to explore. And if you dont mind a little drive you can go to Walpole to do the treetop walk. |

Margaret River has great wine and tours and stuff like that.
There's even a chocolate factory and the Candy Cow.
Maybe check out Bunbury...great place.
Or Busselton...they're all little places down south. |

If you're going as far as Margaret River, keep heading down and around the coast. Albany, Denmark and ESPERANCE.
Don't know about the food and wine, but they are so unbeleiveably beautiful, and devoid of tourists. Very few Aussies have even seen them. Amazing. Kalgoolie is an amazing town to nose around too. Why not do the full circle and head up there from Esperance, and then back to Perth.
PS: I found ONE place in Perth that sold great coffee.
Freemantle. Also a few good food places.
At the risk of getting a few thousand enemies in WA; you don't go there for the food. You go for the laid back lifestyle and beautiful countryside.
Have fun. I envy you. |

Head down south stop in to Harvey or Bunbury visitor centre and get yourself a map that shows all the wineries down South there are dozens of them, most will let you sample them before buying. there is a great winery at Lake Clifton just out of Mandurah that makes fab fruit wine. also there is a cider place at donnybrook made with yummy fruit you dont have to go very far south, just stop in at visitor centres on the way and get info |

There is only one place really Margaret River. Swan Valleys good, I didn't find the area around Pemberton special for food and wine. Leewin estate had great food and wine. Pemberton/Augusta are both good to explore. |

Yallingup, Cowaramup, Grace Town, Karridale, Prevelly, and Margaret River.
Then to try something different visit Augusta, Nannup, and then the Birdwood Fruit Winery in Ballingup on your way back to Perth via the Blackwood Valley (the scenic route). |
