I learned from this site that gliders are routinely kept as pets in the US, but this is not the case in Australia. It's illegal to trade in them, although you can for some reason legally buy native birds and reptiles. I think they should all be banned due to the cruelty, needless deaths, and suffering caused to the animals.
Goonhilda is right: you should get another pet. Please get one from a shelter and save an animal from a life in a cage and an early death. Don't allow your pets to breed, and keep them inside at night, to protect the SUGAR GLIDERS and other native creatures from them. |

You cannot buy a sugar glider. They are a native animal. But if you are lucky you may spot one in outer urban areas of the city. See http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/npws.nsf/Content/Gliding+possums |

You can't buy a sugar glider. They are a wild native animal and people need special permits to have them. Even then that's only if they get approved to keep them. It's unlikely that you would be eligible.
Get another animal. |

The sugar gliders found in the USA are from New Guinea not Australia. The Australian sugar gliders are completely protected and it is not only illegal to keep one as a pet it is also illegal to import one from New Guinea or the USA. Sugar gliders are gregarious and live in groups. Keeping a sugar glider away from others is unnecessrily cruel.
I have lots of them in the trees along the river at the bottom of my garden and I would much prefer them to be there than in a cage in someone's house. |

you can not own one in Australia, they are a protected native |

you cant
but if you would like to help look after/help one for a time contact a wildlife refuge near you & they may need help with injered or orphaned ones |

It's illegal and foolish to attempt to keep a protected native animal as a pet.
Why not join a wildlife rescue group.
That way you get the best of both worlds.
You get to have contact with the little fellows and also save their lives. |
