G'day,
Indonesia!! Tropical weather all year, current currency exchange of 9,135/US$, nice locals. You can get a house, maids to clean the house and driver to take you around. Clothing & food cheap. It is abit dangerous if you look like Chinese. But if you are Caucasians, they will look up to you and will not harm you (most of the time anyway). Politically quite stable, since there are no coup or wars for the last... 10yrs.
Just make sure:
* You don't wear expensive jewelry (eg diamonds etc) while going out for grocery shoppings
* Don't buy expensive cars, even if you can afford it
* You don't use mobile phone while on the road
* Keep your handbags/wallet in secure place
* Lock your valuables while you are out of the house (maids may steal them)
* For ladies, do not wear anything too 'revealing'
* Try not to visit the areas that frequented by "westerners" too often
* You can coupe with the sound of morning prayers start at 5am
* You can coupe with heavily censored movies
* Dusty environment
* Massive traffic jams
And alot more. Interested? Worth it? |

If you don't consider the poor countries in Central America and the Caribbean politically stable, then try to move to The Gambia, West Africa. |

For US$20K best place to live is somewhere like the Philippines/Thailand. I work for an offical agency (sorry can't tell you which one, cause i could lose my job) and have seen people live there for less than AU$16000 (US$14214), and not only support there Philippine partners, but also save money to purchase there flight tickets so that they can travel back and forth from AU, 4 times a year. Hope that info helps. |

lol your question reminds me of a narrow-minded right-winged super conservative racist friend of mine.
in any event, to live like a king would mean that your surrounding areas would also be nice and pleasing too, which is not the case with 3rd world countries, unless you plan on staying inside your "castle" for the rest of your life. and adding politically stable to your delusional expectations would scratch out 3rd world countries as well.
for "Politically stable", "Coastal", and "Sunshine", your options would narrow down to 1st & 2nd world countries next to oceans, but $20K USD is definitely not enough.
and even if you sacrifice political stability in a poor country with low GDP, the cost of living still wouldn't be ridiculously cheap that you would buy things carelessly or live like a king. why? because of transportation costs. if countries are poor, do you think they would have quality goods lying around for you to buy? or quality food for you to eat, let alone quality restaurants among other facilities?
plus, 50% cheaper than US goods is still expensive, and definitely won't make you live like a king. a $400K house would be $200K. a $20K car would be $10K. etc. and if you own the only car in that town then what about upkeep; and are you going to build roads too? bridges, facilities, entertainment, ... goes on and on. there's a reason why there are public facilities in civilization: to share costs and keep individual costs down. |

Many people are now relocating/retiring to Mexico. Almost everything, from housing to medical care is typically 50% less than US prices. Expatriated US citizens have discovered that they live a *better* lifestyle than they did whilst living in the US, enjoying year-round sunshine, outstanding, quality healthcare, and best of all-- being able to afford luxuries they previously only dreamed of.
There are a great many "expat" enclaves along both Mexican coastlines. If you're interested in exploring this option, try "Googling" ... "retire Mexico". You'll have plenty of information to peruse.
Hope this was helpful. Good luck to you! |

Not in Australia old son. Decent coastal houses here go for a million or more, that is $850,000 US and in many places that will only get you the land. You might live modestly in Paraguay, but that is landlocked. There is always the river of course. |

If you could get hold of a functioning time machine and transport yourself back to medieval times, you could not only live like a king on 20K - you could be the King!.
If that fails.... if you could find a nice puppy, owned by a rich old lady, that was named King and indulge in a wee bit of identity theft, that could also work. You might even be able to bribe the puppy for less that 20K, I reckon try giving him a steak and see if he'll change places with you! |
