Where can we go for a short break from Sydney?

I would suggest the Blue Mountains, but that's a bit too oft suggested. Why not somewhere like Jenolan Caves. It's on the other side of the Blue Mountains and has some spectacular caves suitable for all walking abilities and levels of fitness. The Devil's Archway (I think that is what it's called) is quite a spectacular geological formation that has history behind it.

There's also the Hunter Valley for wine tastings etc.

For a beach holliday, I'd suggest Terrigal, which is actually not that far away, or if you wanted to go a little bit further (about a three hour drive) then I'd suggest Port Stephens and Nelson Bay. There are plenty of beaches to choose from there and they vary from surf beaches to quiet and tranquil inlets. There are also dolphin-watching boat trips.

If you want to go south then there's the south coast. Beachside towns like Vincentia in Jervis Bay are nice and peaceful with some of the whitest sand you'll ever see. This area is also particularly good for fishing.

Canberra and the snow fields to the south. Even the "snow fields" in the summer is really nice. Very pretty up there. There are wineries along the way in the Canberra region plus many historic townships to visit.
Canberra itself has enough to keep you interested for at least one long weekend.

blue mountains is awesome, try the hydro magestic hotel or katoomba hotel. Very peaceful and great bushwalks.

Also the hunter valley is a great winery tour. Nice overnight log cabins and of course heaps of great wine to try. (one of australia's premier wine regions)

I alway go down the south coast to Kiama there are a lot a places on the south coast around Shoalhaven two hours drive south of Sydney and excellent priced places to stay also deals with a buffet breakfast.

We spent a week in the Blue Mountains, mostly in Katoomba, but there are other places too. Easy to get there, and plenty to see.

May I suggest the Central West. We have some of the best things to see and do.
Here are some ideas:
Lithgow - Zig Zag Railway, Small Arms Museum (not sure if it's still open), Delta Electricity Mt. Piper Power Station
Bathurst - let's start with Mount Panorama and the National Motor Racing Museum, the Somerville Collection Museum and many more (too many to list)
Canowindra - My Personal Recommendation: Age Of Fishes Museum
Cowra - My Personal Recommendation: Lachlan Valley Railway
Orange - not a real lot to do for families in Orange
Wellington - My Personal Recommendations: Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine, Lake Burrendong (a must-do is to drive onto the wall as there is a road on the main wall), Burrendong Dam, Burrendong Arboretum
Dubbo & Narromine - My Personal Recommendations:
Old Dubbo Gaol, Western Plains Zoo, Narromine Iris Farm, Narromine Aviation Museum, Lime Grove and many more (too many to list here)

My weekends I go away to south coast, usually Batemans Bay (approx. 3 - 4 hour drive) or Nelson Bay (approx 2hrs) but anywhere between those towns are also nice like Terrigal or The Entrance, Jervis Bay or Berry are also great place to visit, day trip or overnight.

See if one of your friends (or check the newsagency) bought the Herald on the weekend - it had "52 Weekends Away"! Sorry I know that's not answered your question directly, but I thought it might help as it had many suggestions :)

Jervis Bay! Its so nice down there at Huskisson and surrounding beaches. Booderee National Park for fishing. Theres a nice treetop restaraunt near Huskisson too, cant think of the name think its called Paperbark Camp. They have treetop accomodation there also. Its only about 2.5 hours from Sydney. They have a little cinema down there, whale watching cruises.

Otherwise Pacific Palms up the coast is also nice.

Central coast.... theres lots to do... and if you want ..nothing.. your only 1 hour from sydney theres the beach the bush and the sun..... and your still close to everything without being in a 'city'
