Where do you recommend visiting in and around Melbourne?

I'm heading off to Australia this year to watch the Ashes. I have a few days spare in Melbourne before the test match and would like some suggestions of what to do and where to go.

I love Melbourne, my brother lives there, well just outside now in a place called Williamstown. As well as the places mentioned about go to the Rialto Tower, hightest office block in the southern hemisphere (it tooke me 3 weeks to build up the courage to go but well worth it) The aquarium is brilliant, full to the brim of indigenous species to Australia. Take a boat trip down the Yarra. Go to the casio down by the Yarra, it is massive. Also down at the Yarra they do a fire display with jets of flames shooting out of the pillars, brilliant. There is a free tram that takes your right round the city that you can jump on and off. The botanics are great too, also the old city jail where Ned Kelly was hanged. And if that doesnt keep you going there is loads of cafes, bars and places to eat, as well as the shops. Hope you have a great time.

Do all of the above! Also jump on a tram down St Kilda Road to St Kilda and check out Fitzroy St for bars and cafes and Acland St for some cool shopping. Check out the Botanic Gardens on the way there (great views of the city from the shrine of rememberance) and the moonlight cinema. Don't forget to eat your vegemite... enjoy!

If you can drive, rent a car and head down the Great Ocean Road, it is spectacular - make sure you stick to the speed limit though!

You could also head the other way to Wilsons Promontory National Park - the southernmost point in Australia. It has one of the best beaches in the world in my opinion - Squeaky Beach! The sand actually squeaks when you walk on it!

Drive down the Great Ocean Road to see the Tweleve Apostles (about halfway towards Adelaide). Round trip can be done in a day but two days is more relaxing and you can stop as you like. You can also head down to Phillip Island to see the penguins at dusk one evening. There are some mountains in the area (although for the life of me I can't remember what the moutain range is called) which are worth a visit for a day or two. There also plenty of gardens and museums in Melbourne from what I remember.

agree 100% on the great coast road, try doing it by bu you get to see more.

also - free tram ride round the centre. Some fantastic restaurants, and so many brothels!

Beaches. Cricket means summer. so pack your swimming costume.

If you like nature:
Penguine Parade, Philip Island
Seal Rock, Boat ride from Queenscliff
Hand feed wild parrots, Belgrave in the hills
Zoos: Melbourne Zoo has a walk in Butterfly enclosure
Healsvale Zoo has Australian Animals
Werribee Zoo is free range African Animals, u ride in vans
near Great Ocean road are the Otway Ranges with water falls and forests. Diving on wrecks near Apollo Bay
Golf with kangaroos in Anglesea (a family of roos live in a cluster of trees and come out early morn)

now after all that, u r going to tell me you don't like nature? .... LOL

Probably my favourite city in the world. Some highlights for me were:
- St Kilda's beach, bars & restaurants
- Chapel Street - great for sitting outside a cafe and watching the world go by
- Chinatown - more great food
For some more ideas, check out my panoramic photos here: http://www.360travelguide.com/results.asp?StartNum=1&CountrySelect=Australia&LocSelect=Melbourne%2C+VIC

Have a great time.
