qldtravelguru
gallipoli is the name of the campagn where 100s of australians (and new zealanders) died on the beaches of gallipoli turkey during a mission in world war one.

each year there is a dawn service on ANZAC day (25ht april) held at this sacred place to remember those men who gave thier lives so that we can live in the freedom and means we are accustomed to today.

The landings occurred in the Dardanelles, currently in Northern Turkey.

Where is Gallipoli?
Today Gallipoli (Turkish Gelibolu), is a city and seaport in northwestern Turkey, in Anakkale Province, on a narrow peninsula extending into the Dardanelles.

The Dardanelles Straits linked the Mediterranean Sea with the Sea of Marmora. This not only gave ready access to the Turkish capital Constantinople and much of the Turkish Empire's industrial powerhouse, but also provided a lane to the Black Sea.
To the north they were protected by the Gallipoli Peninsula; to the south by the shore of Ottoman Asia. In addition, fortresses were well positioned on cliff-tops overlooking shipping lanes.

Since the Great War the land on which this fierce battle broke years ago became nearly a pilgrimage place for young and old Australians and also Turks.

The cove where the Anzacs landed first during the hottest days of Gallipoli war, was renamed as Anzac Cove by the Turkish Government.

Now splendid monoliths mark the key sites, and, a ceremonial area and museum have been established.
The link with Australia was formalized in 1985 with the naming of Anzac Cove.
