Friends of mine recently hired an 8 berth house boat from Echuca and went up (and down) the Murray River. They had one with a spa pool and had a fantastic time.
They highly recommended the trip to me and I'm disappointed I was unable to do one while I lived in Victoria. |

Up near Fraser Island and the Sandy straits you have a number of house boat hire companies. Luxury afloat is one company, Fraser Island house boats and there's another one. They are very very popular so make sure you book in advance. |

I know someone who has purchased a houseboat to have family holidays on the Hawkesbury river in NSW.
Otherwise I believe the Murray river would have many places along it of interest.
Just start with the rivers and the places of interest will follow from there.
Good luck |

There are also boats for hire on Myall Lakes, about 3 hours north of Sydney. Definitely out of Bulahdelah, and maybe Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens. |

Hey mate, two great places to go cruising on house boats is the gold coast broad water or tin can bay (inside fraser island)
The gold coast is a great spot cause it has hundreds of safe morings and places to swim and fish.
Tin Can bay on the other hand is one of the best places around to hire a house boat and go cruising. Again theres plenty of great places to explore and fish as well as you can gain access to fraser island.
Tin Can Bay would have to be my favorite place to crusie as I have been there many times and i have enjoye every trip there.
If your after something different, try the Whitsundays!! You can hire a boat from airlie beach or fly into Hamilton Island and hire one from there. The whitsundays offers more islands and beaches that you could cover in a week but also offers some great snorkeling and diving spots as well as execellent reef fishing.
If you have any further questions about any of the above mentioned places please feel free to email me and i will give you more answers. I have worked on boats and travelled up and down the queensland coast for years from brisbane to Lizard Island in the north..
Regards

Mandurah - West Australia.
It's a fun way to travel, so relaxing. Crabbing. Fishing. Finding a nice place to moor the houseboat and settle in for the night. You are given a map once on board, so you can go where you like and see the sites that are highlighted. |

Lake Macquarie, 2hrs north of Sydney- Australia's largest salt water lake.
It is absolutely beautiful!! Such contrast and you could easily spend a week floating about. There are the sand islands in the middle of the lake which are excellent for pulling up on and swimming, sunbaking, picnicing. There are a number of pubs and restaurants on the lake that you can anchor on the pier, and go inside and have a beautiful meal- especially gwandalan RSL, wangi rsl, and milanos at pelican.
There are also a number of piers you can pull up at and go into nearby supermarkets and shops for supplies.
Fishing (with a license) skiing, wakeboarding, snorkelling are all able to be done on the lake.
Its very peaceful on the weekdays. Lake Macquarie is next to the city of Newcastle and an hour from the Hunter Valley Vineyards, so if you want to jump ship for the day and take a drive you will find even more entertainment.

You should hire a houseboat on the Murray river which is the river that separates Victoria and NSW. We had 2 groups of us that went us last year in March and had a ball! Try the following 2 websites: www.simplyirresistiblehouseboats.com.au and www.bellacasahouseboats.com.au they are the two we went on. Awesome! We left from Moama which is near Echuca. Just keep in mind that the Southern 80 boat race is on every year around early Feb so its always dearer then. Otherwise March is the perfect time, weather is beautiful. |

Houseboats are a great way to holiday with family and friends. Have done it many times and I can say it is great, and can be cheaper then going on land. I think the Murray River is a great place and there are so many places you can go along on the murray. You can try going along the nsw and vic side of the murray for example Mildura, Echuca. Or there is sth aus and vic side, such as berri or in that area. There so much you can do on the good old murray river, pull up and Fish on the enbankments, find a sandy area to swim or just walk along the many tracks that are along the river. you can also visit wineries like the trentham winery, must say they have some nice wine(and im not a wine drinker myself, lol) Or you could go to the many towns along the way that are along the river. Just thinking about it makes me want to go again. There's also places down the river where you see the old wrecks such as sheds/huts which would have been used in the early 1900's and have been abandoned etc.
But there are other places you can get a houseboat such as the lakes, in lakes entrance, victoria also have houseboats, not to forget the darling river of course
Although I guess my fav place would have to be the Murray River, so much you can do there. hope this helps |
