The Netherlands.
The first European to discover New Zealand was a Dutch explorer named Abel Tasman. He thought the islands were somehow attached to South America as a larger landmass and so named them Staten Landt. Dutch map makers later renamed them Novo Zeelandia after the Dutch province of Zeeland. When Captain Cook arrived much later, claiming them for Britain, he Anglicised the name to become New Zealand as it is today. |

Probably the same place as Old South Wales I'd guess.
P.S. Why is this in General - Australia?? :) |

Zealand is a Danish island, but New Zealand is actually named after Zeeland, a Dutch province. |
