I know it does say that Sydney Harbour is called Port Jackson, but calling it Sydney Harbour is just as correct and is probably more locally, nationally and internationally accepted.

Remember that it was named Port Jackson before the city was named Sydney.

Having said that, there is also a coastal town in Nova Scotia in Canada called Sydney, so, if you're that adamant that Sydney Harbour in Australia is not called Sydney Harbour, then it would be in Sydney, Canada.

But please remember Port Jackson and Sydney Harbour are both recognised, accepted and official names for the harbour in Sydney, Australia, and calling it Port Jackson probably only serves to give it a unique name that is tied to colonial Australia during the settlement days. Also Port Jackson is more likely to refer to the "portness", as in the waterway on which boats travel, whereas Sydney Harbour refers to the "geographicalness" of the harbour, as in the waterway with land towards its north and south with an opening through headlands to the east.

Another similar analogy to your arguement might be to ask where New York City was because on my atlas it says "Manhattan". Manhattan is New York City and New York City is Manhattan

Sydney harbour is in downtown Sydney. On it is the Opera house and the bridge.

Just off the ocean in the heart of Sydney, that is: Sydney Australia.

QUOTE
Sydney, Australia
by Walter and Cherie Glaser
There's more to Sydney than a superb harbor.
http://www.sallys-place.com/travel/oceania/sydney.htm

There is a cool bridge:
QUOTE
Completed in 1932, Sydney Harbour Bridge is considered one of Sydney’s major landmarks. The Harbour Bridge is the world’s largest (though not longest) steel arch bridge. Its 160-foot width and 1,650-food length carries eight lanes of traffic, a bicycle path, two footpaths and two railway tracks. Tours of the Sydney Harbour Bridge offer a panoramic view of the harbor.

And other great sites and things to do:
QUOTE
Right in the Heart of Sydney
Right in the heart of Sydney lies the waterside visitors' mecca that is Darling Harbour. It's close enough to walk to from the central business district — you can see the city skyline up close from the Harbourside Shopping Centre.

There are enough parking spaces in and around the area to accommodate those who drive from wherever they come from.

Have fun if you go there! Send us all pictures!!
