There are 3 essential selling points for cairns
The reef/ geen island
Kuranda and the tablelands
Port Douglass and the daintree rainforest
generally if you are going there you should see all three.
For me the reef is a must, the best operator I have found is quicksilver cruises which operate out of port douglas, or they also own sunlover cruises who operate out of cairns.
both have a pontoon so you cruise out there and then get off ono a pontoon have a snorkel lunch glass bottom tour etc... is a ful on day but is great
the other must for me is the train to kuranda and the skyrail back
it is an interesting take on things
the hidden gem in all of this is for me is the accommodation out at the cairns beaches, palm cove, holloways beach, trinity beach etc stay there if possible all day tours pick up from there and are within 20 mins of cairns itself.
anyway go and enjoy. |

I would go on a tour to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest http://www.cairnsweb.com.au/ |

Do you mean where to stay or what to do in the day. There are zillions of hostels and apartments in the town and along the seafront. Things to do include pubs, clubs, hostel activities. Day trips to the great barrier reef - snorkel or dive.
Day trip to Kuranda and Atherton Tablelands.
Day to Tully River for white water rafting.
Day skydiving and other adventure sports.
Day trip to Cape Tribulation and Mossmann gorge, Daintree Rainforest. Have a ball! |

Get yourself up to Kuranda, and Cape Tribulation. 2 of the nicest places in the world & incredibly tropical. |

I was there a couple years ago, but since Cairns does not really have a beach I ended up spending most of my time in Port Douglas (about an hour north). However if you are planning on staying in the city, then you can head towards the waterfront (where the main pier is). There are tons of restaurants and cafes there to have dinner and drinks, as well as a pretty huge flea market. Otherwise rent a car and drive towards Port Douglas and you can stop at many small nice beaches as you head north. Even better, purchase a cruise trip to the Great Barrier Reef...about a 2-3 hrs boat ride around $200-$300AUD...you will NOT be disappointed, |
