Chennai is a great place to live. But be choosy with respect to your office , children school etc and of course your budget. Generally Anna Nagar, Adyar, Velachery, Kilpauk, Abiramapuram, ECR, OMR are nice places to live

It depends upon ur requirements.

* Adyar, Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Kilpauk, Nungambakam are few areas where the cost of living his high and porsch area.
* Pallavaram, Chrompet, Adambakkam, Ramapuram, Nandambakkam, Porur, Vadapalani, Kodambakkam, perambur, Velachery, Purasawalkam are medium range area.
* Tambaram, Perungalatur, Madipakkam, Medavakkam, Ambattur, Avadi, Thirumullaivoyal, Villivakkam, etc. are extension areas and quiet cheaper.
* North Chennai including, Parry's, Central, Thiruvotriyur is much congested and I don't advice that area.

The best place to stay in Chennai is Adayar. This area has been unique by its inhabitants .This has been the place where college lecturers and teachers of schools have been residing since generations and hence is most civilised and cultured in Chennai city and relatively clean and safe.

In chennai, water is going to be your biggest concern. I mean ofcourse you'l find a lot of places with good supply of water, but be careful to check how salty it is.
Personally id recommend Anna Nagar. Its like a minicity, you get everything here, except for a theatre complex, but theres one in construction right now, i believe that going to open in september. Anyway, my point is you should consider Anna Nagar West (as opposed to anna nagar east)because its relatively peaceful in comparison to other places, it being almost in the outskirts and all. Also theres a good school there, SBOA, which might be convenient in case you have children.
Like someone else pointed out Besant Nagar is a good enough place too, since you have th beach nearby and the besan nagar beach is alot neater than the marina beach. i hate the marina beach, but again, if youre looking to settle there, be vry careful of checking fo salty water since it is so near the beach.
Alwarpet, Adyar are a few other places where you can find nice places if you look carefully.
Ive been in chennai for around 5 years to date and I found Anna Nagar the best place to settle in. Good luck.
