The most obvious attractions around Sydney are:
1. Crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
2. Visiting the Opera House.
3. Taronga Park Zoo to see Koalas and Kangaroos.
4. Bondi Beach.
5. The Rocks (old Sydney District).
6. Convict Barracks (near Australian High Court ~ across the road from it)
7. Martins Place.
8. Darling Harbour (Bunch of Attractions there)
9. Sydney Casino.
10. Fox Studios.

Not so obvious Attractions:
11. Cronulla / Wanda Beach (just as good as Bondi and Manly). You can catch a train to this place.
12. Ferry ride from Circular Quay to Taronga (get nice picture of opera house and harbour bridge together, as well as going past fort denison).
13. Watsons Bay ~ where the rich live...
14. Parramatta ~ A lot of convict history there.
15. Wollongong ~ BHP HQ, lots of mining etc.
16. Hunter Valley ~ 50+ wineries packed together (2 hours from Sydney)

Take the coastal walk path from Coogee to Bondi in the morning, have breakfast. Walk back and have lunch and a few schooners at the Coogee Bay Beer Garden. Leave before the Poms wreck the joint.

Featherdale Wildlife Park (you get to pet animals there) and Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House (famous landmarks).

Taronga Park Zoo. Centrepoint Tower. The Rocks and Observatory Hill. A beer at the Lord Nelson and the Hero of Waterloo, Sydney's oldest pubs. The walk from the Bridge to Circular Quay to the Opera House to Mrs Macquaries Chair. A ferry to Manly. A Rivercat to Parramatta. Bondi Beach. Use the Sydney Explorer buses for the museums and art gallery. Get information about what is on in Sydney from tourist outlets, hotels etc.

Taronga Zoo is awesome and you get a GREAT view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from there! They have a new enclosure and new elephants, with an underwater viewing tank! If you look them up you will see that they also have overnight 'campouts' at the zoo now, which is a new idea too.

Go to the top of centrepoint tower and have a look at the view of the city.

Walk the harbour bridge and marvel at its' wonder!

If you want to travel for about an hour out of Sydney, you will find the Blue Mountains (skyway, lookouts) to the west or the Central Coast (beaches, markets) to the north of Sydney.

Good luck!

Put on your walking shoes and climb up and down every street, trek up to the highest point in Sydney and look out over the Sydney Harbor and Opera House. Ask any Sydneysider for directions and they'll probably walk you there. Hit the spectacular beaches - do some wind/kite surfing!

i think the best was the Sydney opera house

the boat was a great way to get pictures also

it was GORGEOUS!!

For an overview of the city, the view from Centerpoint is exceptional, but I prefer the trip from Circular Quay to Manly on the ferry. If there was only one thing you would get to do in Sydney, it should be the ferry to Manly and back.

Come this weekend and walk the Harbour Bridge, its celebrating 75 years! Its closed to traffic for the whole day, dont know when the last time that happened.

Have to agree with Marco P, I did the Harbour Bridge walk last week and it was awesome up there!

Other things would be Manly and Bondi Beach, Blue Mountains, if you've got time Port Stephens for dolphin watching/sand boarding, Opera House tour, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Aquarium, Sky Tower...

In Sydney a must see is The Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk. I have never experienced it but i know from friends that have been there and they completely loved walking to the top of the bridge. They caught lots of fresh air and the beautiful sunset.

you must see the island first, lest you land in the water...... @_@
