Cronulla is a beachside suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Cronulla is derived from kurranulla, claimed to have been a word for the area in a dialect of the area's original Aboriginal inhabitants, the Dharawal peoples. The word means place of many shells.

Cronulla is the southern-most coastal suburb in the Sydney metropolitan area. It is located on a peninsula framed by Botany Bay to the north, Bate Bay to the east, Port Hacking to the south, and Gunnamatta Bay to the west. The neighbouring suburb of Woolooware lies to the west of Cronulla. The Kurnell peninsula, the site of the first landfall on the eastern coastline made by Lt. (later Captain) James Cook in 1770, is accessed by driving northeast out of Cronulla on Captain Cook Drive.

Shark Island, just off Cronulla Beach, is a famous surfing and bodyboarding spot, and the site of the annual Shark Island Challenge bodyboarding contest.

On 11 December 2005, the beachfront at Cronulla was the scene of widely-publicised mob disturbances and violent confrontations; see "2005 Sydney race riots". These incidents continued over a series of days and also spread to other areas in Sydney.

Cronulla is a beach suburb of Sydney, but I suggest you don't go there - at least I view it as the most dangerous suburb of Sydney, but I might be wrong because I've never actually been to Sydney, but I've heard of the riots some time ago and it's been referred to as the most racist area in Sydney.

If you want to go to the beach then Bondi Beach is much better anyway, and riot-free.

Go here in Google Earth and you will be in the heart of it.

I moved to a small suburb west of Cronulla from the USA. Lived there for four years with my wife and young kids (left just prior to the riots). We used to go to Cronulla often and I was surprised by the riots - but the underlying tensions had been apparent for a while. We'll be moving back in a few years & I can't wait! It is home.

I live 20 min from Cronulla. Its definitly south of Sydney. Its really popular for the south western suburb's population.

The riots were just a flash point in an otherwise idealic history. Its really sad that it happened but tensions arise in any community. If you are thinking of travel down under, have no fear about Cronulla or any attraction in Sydney.

Like always, wherever you go, listen to the news or ask tourist help places, if there is any concern about your intended destination.

I've been to Israel, and the two weeks I was there, there was no problems in my travel, but there was a evedience of the war that was going on.

Cronulla is a proud place in Australian hearts. This has been brewing for at least 15 years. They came down and beat up 2 lifeguards and told them "Get off our beach". Why do they persist on trying to destroy every country they go to? No more leaving your dirty fallafel wrappers all over the parks. They mass down and do absolutley nothing for the local economy, but leave a greasy mess for the Aussies to pick up. Well...NO F@CKING MORE!!! F@CK OFF!!

A place with a great beach where we get problems with lebanese legends coming in and causing fights.

A bunch of idiots took it on themselves to try and fix this real problem and caused a riot a couple of months ago.

Why the question by the way?
