There are about 40 of them, depending on what you want. Bondi is overrated.

I would probably say Manly (close to the city - public transport is available from the city) or Palm Beach (car is necessarey if you are staying in the city), if your looking for big surf. But if you are looking for a more quiet beach with little or no wind and hardly any waves then i would either choose Balmoral beach (close to the city - public transport available from the city) or the other side of Palm beach which faces the Hawkesbury river. If Palm beach is too crowded, then just down the road is a very good beach called Whale beach (there are no wales there...).
Hope this helped...

Hasn't anybody been to Woolongong? It's an hour's drive, but it's great!

I lived in Bondi for a few years - its overcrowded and overrated.
You should do the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte and see for yourself which of the beaches you like best!

Bondi is supposed to be the best beach but its mostly just tourists. Locals go to the locals beaches and leave the touristy ones alone.
EDIT- Theres lots of beaches in Wollongong, which one? I've been to most of them
