Where is the best place to stay in Sydney?

I am due to leave in 2 weeks to go travelling, after going around Thailand for 8 weeks i will land in Sydney where me and my partner will be living and working there for 6 months. At first we will be staying in hostels till we find our feet and then the intention is to find a house/flat share or rent a place of our own. I just wondered what area is pretty central to night life, the beach, public transport but also safe. Thanks guys.

If you don't need the night-life of the city every day of the week, prehraps try heading towards the Manly region.

There are plenty of beaches to choose from, some decent pubs/hotels, a large mall only a few km down up the road, great scenery & alot of other tourists stay there as well.

There is a ferry which takes just 30mins to travel into the city (which is a very scenic way of getting around). Or there is the option of taking a bus.
It's a fairly safe area & has a more relaxed vibe than the inner city.

In advance, Welcome to Sydney!

Hi,

Anywhere in the 'eastern suburbs' would match your needs the best. As it is an affluent area you would need to budget for the higher rents but crime will not be an issue at all. (eg. Bondi, Coogee, Paddington, Surry Hills)

Second to the east would be the 'inner west'. Area's a little further away from the beaches but in some ways much more 'central' to all that the city has to offer. (eg. Glebe, Annandale)

If your planning getting around via public transport, consider renting near a main traffic corridor that takes you straight from home to work (that is if you know where you'll be working).

This is the Sydney train system map:

Here is the bus system website:

Here's where you'll find your 'houses to rent' :

Enjoy your stay : )

Eastern suburbs beaches fit your description best, but they aren't cheap (Bondi to Coogee). Most Sydneysiders can't afford to live very close to the beach or city, they have to commute. Just about everywhere is safe, you don't need to worry about that aspect.

Symmetry is important. The lower North Shore. Neutal Bay, Crows Nest, Cammeray.

Try the Southern suburbs of Sydney such as Cronulla. It is right on the beach and has a train line . It is about a half hour drive to the city.

Eastern suburbs might be your great choice. Plenty of flat sharing in suburbs like Kensington, Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra.

Check out the following websites.

Good luck.

You'd be looking for something in the inner west (Newtown, Petersham etc), lovely area, full of life constantly, but if you wanna rent a unit it can be a little on the expensive side. From Newtown train station you can go anywhere.. the rail network is pretty good, so it wont take you long to get to the beach (even though its still winter here). Anyway, have fun in Thailand, and i know your going to love Sydney, its the best city in the world :)
