I've done the trip from Sydney to Perth on the Indian Pacific and it was just the greatest experience however although we loved the "scenes" some people might find this doesn't change enough for them as you are going through desert for a long period. I plan on doing the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin someday - a friend of mine said it was fantastic.
I'm interested in that book someone else mentioned but don't think I'd find it in New Zealand |

The people who have answered before me have given you and your wife some awesome ideas but I just wanted to add the Puffing Billy steam train ride in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. It is on my to do list when I'm in Melbourne next. It's only short but apparently it's pretty amazing. Enjoy your visit when you eventually get here. |

I recommend the ABT railway that leaves from Queenstown or Strahan in Tasmania known as the west coast wilderness railway, it has a rack and pinion drive to help it up its 1 to 20 grade and passes over 40 bridges and climbs over 200 mtrs over a 34 km journey |

the Indian pacific express, pure luxury. You have asked a pretty open question though, Australia has so much beauty everywhere. Also check out all steam train journey's out of Sydney, one which come's to mind is the 3801, for those who admire train history this is an adventure which you won't forget. |

For smaller ride with great scenery the Zig Zag railway steam train in the Blue Mountains is amazing to ride. For longer trips the Indian Pacific railway runs through the mountains heading west from Sydney to Perth would cover a lot of the country. It takes 3 nights to travel. |

Hema Maps have put a little foldout publication titled "Rail Journeys of Australia" that might give you a few ideas.
It boasts that it has maps of the entire rail network and describes all great Australian rail journeys. It also lists heritage railways, railway museums and miniature railways throughout Australia. The one i've got only cost $12.95 and i found it in Borders.

If you go down to Tasmania and arrive by boat at Devonport on your way to the ABT railway on the West Coast you could also check out the Don River Railway. I have always wanted to do that.
go to
http://www.donriverrailway.com.au/
and check it out. |

Do the Kuranda line from Cairns, excellent. The trip across from Sydney-Perth has a variety of scenery but an awful lot of nothing.Have done it once,am not eager to return , bit of an ordeal. Adelaide -Melbourne was a good run.Koala in the trees and flocks of parrot in all sorts of colours spring to mind. |
