Where to live in Australia? |
Hi,
I'm planning to move to australia with my boyfriend, we're both in our early 20's. We were considering the Gold Coast, Melbourne or Adelaide. We went to the Gold Coast for a month last year, but are not sure what the climate/ work etc is like all year round! Anywhere but Sydney, I found it way too busy and crowded - we also plan to bring over our dog after a year so somewhere dogs are really welcome would be good |

Having lived most of my life in Sydney I decided on a change about 4 years ago, after considering my options I chose Hobart.
My needs were a town or city city that can offer a reasonable level of employment and services.
Melbourne - couldn't see why I would move 1 large city to another when I was looking for a change
Brisbane & Gold Coast - to be honest I just don't like them
Perth - a possibility, but no friends/relatives
Adelaide - some relatives, but I find it a bit sad, nice to visit could't stay
Darwin, Townsville etc - too hot and humid
Canberra - too planned and a 1 company town
So it came down to Hobart and have never been happier |

If you find Sydney too busy and crowded, you won't like the Gold Coast either. Adelaide is a lot smaller and quieter, but perhaps too quiet for you. "Everyone" says it's boring, but plenty of people still live there, so they must not think so :) Melbourne is a good size, plenty to do, not too big. If you are renting, a dog probably won't be welcome. It's possible to negotiate, but as a general rule, no. If you are buying, you are allowed to keep a dog. Obviously your choice of housing should reflect this. Don't try to keep a dog in a flat, or a dog bigger than a guinea pig in a unit with a courtyard. Use common sense. I've never heard of anywhere that doesn't allow dogs if you own your own home.
Basically, you have to go where the work is. Consider some of the country towns, they can be quite nice, and still close to the "big smoke" when needed. I live in Bendigo, which is two hours from Melbourne. We have almost everything we need up here and I only travel down to Melbourne for social gatherings (friends, family, SCA involvement) these days, not to buy anything I can't get here. Except for cheap fabric. Can't get that here. |

The Gold coast is a great place to live, but it can be expensive this is because it is mainly built for a tourist market. Once you live there for a month or two you will be able to find places that are not as expensive. This is mainly food. hint: most of the shops/restaurants/cafes that are on the beachfront are going to be more expensive because that is the tourist strip. The gold coast also has a very nice climate with over 300+ days of sunlight, the temperatures vary from around 25-35 degrees centigrade. One other thing is that the Gold Coast is on strict water restrictions so it is best to conserve water. Hope you find a great place to live. |

Definately brisbane
your right - sydney is too crowded
melbourne is just as crowded but with really bad weather
adelaide is just strange and EXTREMELY HOT
the gold coast is great but everything metal eventually coroads from the salt air and is also extremely over priced
so you can do what alot of ppl do and live in brisbane and DRIVE to the gold coast ... i do it every second weekend and it takes me 50mins.
Brisbane property is ALOT cheaper but alot nicer, insurance for housing is cheaper cause there is a theft excess in GC, the weather is warm in summer but not too hot (cause you can always go for a swim at GC) and cool but not too cold in winter ... we get on average about 80 days of rain a year and even then it doesnt last long.
the night life in brisbane is great with the pubs and clubs being really popular but ALOT cheaper than GC and melbourne.
you can usually afford to live within 10 mins of work and the wages compared to the cost of living leave us brisbane-ites on top with enough left to travel
housing - can get anything from the beautiful "queenslanders" to extremely modern but one thing over melbourne is because the population is alot less there is alot more room ... a property which is timy in melbourne 40 mins from the city would still cost $850,000+ whereas in bris its approx $400,000 for a lovely sized house with huge yard thats walking distance to the world famous Morton bay and 40 mins to the city plus brisbane has HEAPS of fenced leash-free dog parks. As well as alot of beautiful Islands off the coast for holidaying |

I would say either Melbourne or Gold Coast. Adelaide is boring and does not have many things to do. I personally think Melbourne is the best out of the 3. It is close to Mt Hotham & if you enjoy skiing that is great place to go. Hope this helps. |

I live on the Gold Coast and its the best place to be...the weather is lovely...summer can get quite hot...and the winters crisp and cool...we have great dog parks and there is a couple of areas on the beach that you are allowed to have your dog run free. You have been here before for a month...then you would be familiar with our Theme Parks...Movie World, Sea World, Wet n Wild, etc. The beautiful hinterland..Mt Tamborine, Lamington National Park, Glow worms cave...Plenty of night life.. Clubs, Restaurants, . ..take a cruise on the waters..go para gliding, jet skiing....Surfers Paradise is a tourist Meca all year round...so that makes it very busy...but you don't have to live right in surfers...you can choose many surrounding areas...also huge shopping centres..Pacific Fair, Robina Town Centre, Australia Fair...Harbor Town. There is work here...you just have to look, the local paper is huge on Saturdays for jobs, and we have Internet job sites for work here as well. The hospitality industry is big here...you will make friends easy ..give it a go...you will love it. |

If you live in the absolute centre of Sydney, of course it's crowded.
But Sydney covers about 100km of the coastline, and extends about 60km inland. There's a LOT of spaces for you & your family.
My local park includes a dog park, etc
It's not crowded where I live in Sydney, at all. |

Melbourne for sure

melbourne's got everything sydney's got except better
there's a wider vareity of work than the other places
and melbourne's got the nicest parks, perfect for your dog |

Brisbane, which is near the Gold Coast, is lovely. Not too hot in the summer and not too cool in the winter. There's quite a lot of good entertainment. Housing prices both rental and to purchase are, I think, fairly reasonable, depending on what your'e looking for. There's plenty of work going in Queensland right now as well. I find Queenslanders are really nice people too. You'd need to check out our quarantine laws regarding bringing your pet into Australia. Hope things go well with you and your future move. :) |
