Where to move to in Australia? (small family, gothy tattooed and pierced)? |
My small family is planning on moving to Australia within the next five years, but we have no idea where would be the best place. I have a young daughter that would need to attend a good public school, my husband will obtain his licensing in welding, and I am a photographer. A well, we are both the gothy tattooed and pierced type and would like to be able to be around similar people. Where in Australia would be the best place for us to live and why? |

Sydney's inner west especially Newtown would suit perfectly, is has the most diverse population- arty, literate and tolerant and is the centre of the goth culture in Sydney
Newtown Public is a good school and if your local then when she is a bit older she would be accepted into Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, which has a great academic and performing arts record |

Great public schools
Great goth community |

I would stick to the inner city and surrounding suburbs of Sydney. I wouldnt go to canberra. I would check out suburbs like Darlinghurst, Potts Point, Elizabeth bay, Rushcutters bay, and Paddington. These suburbs are only roughly about 2kms east of the city, have easy access to public transport and you will find you'll be amongst like minded people. You will probably find it easier to get a job as a photographer as you would be right in the city, and as far as your look goes I can assure you no one will even bat an eyelid. There are many different types of people that live in these areas including families but there are plenty of pierced goth people too. You'll fit right in.
For prices to either purchase or rent a place in these suburbs take a look at http://www.realestate.com.au that should give you an idea of cost. (take into account the $USD to $AUD exchange)
check out the local public school at Darlinghurst http://www.darlinghur-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/
p.s Boilermaker/welders can earn a lot of money and there seems to be a shortage of those right now. Best to train for something in demand so check out the job situation at http://www.seek.com.au
If you don't like Sydney then I would consider Melbourne as another good choice.
Good luck :) |

If you are looking for similar people you will find them in Sydney. Don't come to the Gold Coast, you will stick out like a sore thumb. |

Before you worry about where ask yourself if Australia will let you in.
It is very difficult unless you have skills that are in demand. To be frank Australia is not short of welders or photographers.
The Australian Government has a website where you can check if you qualify.
No point going further if you can't meet their requirements.

Go to Melbourne.
Suburbs like St. Kilda or Richmond are good but pretty expensive to rent in. Or even the western suburbs, there is a lot of industry there, and plenty of Welding jobs. |

There seem to plenty of gothy, tattooed, pierced people around in every city. They seem to live in the the inner suburbs of the major cities.
You should probably choose your location based on climate and work opportunities as we have good schools in every part of the country. Brisbane, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne would have the most welder opportunities right now, but that could easily change in 5 years. Brisbane is warm to hot all year around with dry winters and most of its rain in summer; Perth has very hot summers and cool to mild winters; Sydney has hot summers and cool to cold winter and is quite humid all year around; Melbourne has hot and cool and everything in between summers and cold winters.
Welder is currently one of the most critically required occupations but your husband will need to have trade qualifications and experience to be eligible for skilled immigration. A good photographer should be able to find work anywhere. |
