There is a tropical zoo here that has all Australian animals and also a wildlife park - lions, hippos etc.
Get your photo taken cuddling a koala ...
Nature - you have the Great Barrier Reef, the Tablelands and unlimited Rainforest ! Port Douglas is not far away either for a great coastline drive.

well if you want the same experience as seeing animals on "show" as in zoo's pretty well anywhere in the world, then go to Sydney or Australia Zoo (on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland). However, if you really want to see Australia and experience something different to anywhere else... then there is really only one choice (based on your desire to see native animals plus nature plus "cool food"). That is go the "top end" that is the Northern Territory. Darwin (the capital of the NT) is probably as good a starting point as any. From there you will be able to venture out to various places such as the Kakadu (although for some areas special permits are required).. also just generally heading through the NT you will experience the most amazing outback scenery and wildlife...
Best time is probably mid year (as in mid winter), as in summer it tends to be pretty rainy. In truth some say that there are only two seasons in the top end, thats is "the wet" and "the dry".. With the "wet" being the monsoonal summer time.. with incredible rainstorms etc.
So... to sum up, if you want the theme park experience.. then go to big cities and places like Australia Zoo (which are great, but are still essentially theme parks).. BUT if you want to see the real Australia.. then get out in the "bush".

You can see many native animals in natural habitat close to large cities and towns
The weather is warmer and there are beautiful views and coastlines
other than that i would suggest uluru, alice springs or kakadu in central Northern Territory BUT going in summer would be extremely hot |

Queensland. Australia Zoo at Beerwah has great wildlife, if you wanna see nature than the glasshouse mountains are great and they're right near Australia Zoo. I'm sure you could find some great restaurants here... but i'd suggest also visiting the theme parks on the Gold Coast. Head further up north and you get the Daintree and Barrier Reef. |

I would say go North unless your coming during the Australian summer than I would go to the Adelaide area |

I'd recommend Melbourne - very biased here, but the Melbourne Zoo is awesome and you can go on day trips here and there to the real country in Victoria. That being said Tooronga Zoo in Sydney is really cool, you get to take the ferry across the harbour, it really is quite spectacular.
If you really want to go 'Aussie', look into Darwin, Alice Springs, Uluru etc. for some awesome displays of nature that not many Australians even get to experience. |
