NZ is one of the few countries that really do have 4 seasons. Personally I think the south Island is better - beautiful landscape vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coasts, golden beaches, alpine peaks, glaciers, rain forests and grassy plains.!

I lived in Nelson at the top of the south island. Nelson city is the 10th most populous city and geographical centre of New Zealand. Nelson and Tasman Region has a resident population of 92,300 (2006 census)

Plenty of countryside around Nelson - from the city itself either direction you can be in the country within 10-15 mins drive.

Annual Rainfall: 985mm, Average Sunshine Hours: 2392hrs
Max Temperature January 22.3Âș Min 13Âș Extreme Max 36.13Âș
Max temperature July 12.2Âș Min 1.5Âș Extreme Min -6.6Âș

Main website for Nelson is http://nelsonnz.com

On one side of Nelson you have Abel Tasman http://www.abeltasman.co.nz and Golden Bay, http://www.goldenbay.net.nz/en/guide.html and the other side Marlborough.http://www.destination.co.nz/marlborough - everything is not far away if wanting a change of scenery.

Close to everything, beaches, the countryside, ski fields, wineries, hiking tracks etc
. again my opinion, less crime in South Island also. Nelson is probably the safest place. Next choice would be Christchurch population around 350,000

Almost anywhere is great but Christchurch City would suit you weather wise and innovative in Technology........also smack bang in the middle of the most beautiful island of waterfalls ,beaches and national forests.....
Actually their are four large cities and many pretty towns in-between them all.....
The attraction livingin New Zealand has to be the fact that you could be tramping through some rain forest at 10am , diving off the rocks at 2pm , back home shower and hit the nightclubs by 9 pm.......
Enjoy yourself while youre here and only leave your foot-prints.....( Conservation is respected here ,specially in the forests an beaches)......
see ya when ya get here

Every place in NZ is cheaper than the UK.

Christchurch would be the best bet for countryside. If you don't want the city life then avoid Auckland and NZ but then only 20 minutes out of Auckland and you are in countryside. It is a small country. People are very friendly You will have to satisfy the immigration requirements.

Blenheim, Marlborough South Island NZ it's called the sunshine city. I've seen more of NZ than most Kiwi's, I liked most city's in NZ as they all were unique. You would find Blenheim very much what you are looking for. Good restaurants, sports club, pubs and night clubs, golf links, schools, shops and shopping centers, and a very good central business district. Blenheim has close access to many other cities and surrounded by countryside. You can catch the ferry to Wellington, drive to Nelson, Christchurch, Queenstown, Kai Kora and to the are many local beaches and wineries.

Nelson(top of south island) is a lovely place and has good weather all round.Warmer in north island in winter and more jobs there as 3/4 of population live there.Best to try different areas over a period of time.

Nelson you will love it . It's certainly not as big as Christchurch so I'm not sure how you would go regarding work. I believe there is about 43,000 live there but you will have plenty of countryside. one of NewZealands better climates beaches . the Able Tasman national park , The Marlborough Sounds nearby, wineries and fruit growing area. As for work you will have more chance in Wellington, A beautiful city but oh so miserable in the cold wet winds. Get a nice day there and it's really lovely . As for cheap housing I think you will find it cheap in comparison to England but still. You could do with $4000,000 NZ -for a nice average home and more for a better home

It depends of whether you are able to find work in areas other than the cities. The further south you go, the cheaper the properties - and the colder it gets. Others have mentioned Christchurch - maybe because it is very English in style - personally I found it very unfriendly living there and it is very cold in winter ranging from below freezing to about 7 to 12degC. It can have many days in the thirties in summer. Dunedin is quite cheap but very cold. Wellington is a beautiful city and quite compact so you can live out of the city and not have to travel so far. It does have very strong winds in winter. I doubt if there would be many areas as cold as the UK - except in the lower south island. In Auckland temp range between 5degC to 15degC in winter but often warmer than that and between 15deg and 22deg in summer. Jan, Feb, March can have days in the high twenties. Very rarely goes over 30deg C. Auckland is the most expensive city in NZ and the largest

my best friend, there is no a better place than where you live, only what you can do is to understand the country and their rules, then it could a better place for you to live.
