Wheres a nice place in australia to raise a family?

I want to leave sydney and am wondering if anyone knows of any nice places to raise kids in australia. I want somewhere not really, really small but not huge. Somewhere that has shops, schools, low crime and a sense of community. I love the beach also and would like somewhere cheaper than sydney. Can you suggest somewhere and tell me about the place and what makes it special? thanks.

Perth!!
I love it!
beach at your doorstep,
very friendly vocals.
sunniest capital city in the world,

There is nothing i don't like about Perth is a absolutely amazing city and i wouldn't want to live anywhere else. There was a survey and perth residents were voted the friendliest in the country. It was also rated the 4th most livable city in the world in 2008! Living in Perth is great, its one of Australia's best kept secrets even from Australia itself. Great education system and great opportunities. The vibe is great in the city and the suburbs are very kid friendly, with lots of things to do.

I have lived here my whole life and never felt isolated or bored, everything you need plus more. we are only isolated is you compare as to the other capital cities in Australia. Perth is closer to Jakarta than it is to Sydney, but that's why so many people love it and you would never notice how far away you are untill you looked at a map. So much to see and do, with a 12,000 km coast line. I'm glad our little clean city is not well know or famous but it is now the fastest growing city in Australia - now that's got to mean something.

I'm not going to say it's perfect... no city is, House prices are expensive, although cheaper then you would find in Sydney. Some residents are against the shopping hours and most shops are not open sundays although some argee this is very easy to get use too, and can be a good thing because it gives you a day to do other things.

Pay no attention to any of the other people that have answered this question.

Melbourne is the best city to raise a family the reasons are as listed below

1. The houses are cheap

2. It has some of the best childcare centres in Australia

3. It has TONNES of shops (That is why it is famous for being Australia's shopping capital)

4. It has a very large number of schools to chose from and a number of them are Australia's best.

5. The suburbs of Melbourne have a sense of community

6. It has some of Australia's best beaches with great views (Not like on the Gold Coast where all you can see is apartments that only rich people can afford.

7. It has been declared the worlds most livable and sustainable city nearly 10 years in a row (Cheap houses, low crime, high quality of living)

8. It has lots of activities for all members of the family ranging from Museums to Imax theaters to surfing to romantic picnics.

9. The people are very friendly and approachable (Which makes it easy to make new friends and to ask for directions etc.)

10. It has australias best public transport network so it is easy to navigate etc.

So there you go 10 excellent reasons to Move to Melbourne, Australia

little stars
Adelaide, South Australia

South Australia is actually one of the cheapest (or even cheapest) state in Australia. Its quiet(peaceful) but is fun at the same time. It has good shops, nice malls but is not all that hyped up like sydney. It has a low crime rate as well. It also has the most wonderful and breath taking beaches! It also has very good schools.

I think it's special because - it's peaceful and gives you a feel of relaxtion while it can also be exciting at times. It can be a bit of both.

I think Adelaide, South Australia is a wonderful place to raise a family and meets all your requirments.

Why don't you just travel down the coast to Wollongong or Shellharbour.. We're out of the hussle bustle of Sydney yet still close enough at the same time.

We have some inland suburbs with property at around $300,000 for a small one bedroom. These suburbs are really popular with young families.

The beach suburbs are somewhat dearer but if you go south and aren't looking for beach front you could get a good deal at $450,000.

The Illawarra would also keep you close to friends and family in Sydney, its a nice day trip for them to come visit. You could possible keep your current jobs and wouldn't be missing out on anything you have now in Syd.

I left Sydney 5 years ago, moved to Brisbane Bayside.

Good Shops, good Schools, some small beaches suitable for young kids, (mine was 8), but Gold Coast only 45-60 minutes away.

Houses were cheaper than Sydney, but the gap is closing. 5 bed houses now from about $500,000, but very close to the water.

There is crime in the area, though. The newspaper recently informed us about people stealing gnomes from the gardens !! Normal crimes still happen, but we feel safer than we did in Sydney.

canberra

duh.
its awesome.
we have decent enough shops, okay im from melbourne and cbr is a bit eh. but its like a 2 and a half hour drive from the beach -batemans bay ftw.
and its only like 3 horus from sydney if you want to visit friends and family.

Houses in general are cheaper, depending where you want to live.
rent in canberra isn't though. Canberra has the highest rent in Australia and a really tight rental market, its easier to get a job then a rental property here.
