Sunbury, 3429, north west of Melbourne. 15 minutes from the airport, (16 kms). Very affordable, and the quality of life is good.

Cheap is not necessarily best .

Personally I vote for the outer Western Suburbs (I'm in Werribee) as being affordable with good access to the city & central areas.

Basically you have to weigh up housing cost ( rent morgage ) against travel time & travel cost & see what works for you.

If you ask anyone who doesn't live in the west, they'll tell you to NEVER go there. It smells and it's too far away from everything.
Personally I would say outer south eastern suburbs (knox, wantirna, Bayswater, The Basin) are the most affordable and the best place to live. It is a bit of a hike to the city (maybe an hour drive) but 30mins on train. And u'd be near the beautiful hills.

The western suburbs is definitely more affordable, but some areas are not as good as some. Some of the decent ones you can try: Werribee, Sydenham, Keilor, Tarneit, Caroline Springs, Sunshine, Melton

Altona Meadows is good and cheap, near schools shops and libraries. Not far from the beach either. Youd be suprised how much cheaper it is compared to other areas, for pretty much the same type of house.
